ОтветитьIt's a shame he uses scenes from STH 2005, because if you delve into the original SA2 story (and especially the Japanese voice acting), it's clear that Shadow's memories are fake and Gerald made him in prison, so he never met Maria.l for real
ОтветитьYo, this looks pretty decent, and I like a lot of direction choices. (Gerald popping in during Maria's plea is smart foreshadowing, and also i like how the timeline doesnt quite add up, which makes sense since his memories are all screwed up here), I also like how closely you stuck to the OG game's audio, down to it cutting the song just a moment before Shadow finishes saying "Revenge!" However, I do think there is a lot to improve upon:
The posing is fine, but the actual animation feels stiff and a bit too automated between keyframes. Some more stylised in-betweens can go a LONG way.
I think there are way too many closeups. The original game had a good balance of wide shots, curved shots, angled shots, etc. Here, it seems after the initial establishing shots, it just goes to a closeup of Shadow, to a closeup of Maria, to another closeup of Shadow's hands, to ANOTHER of Maria, to then a pov shot, and then the maria plea ends and we immediately go to ANOTHER closeup. You also lose the dynamic pose the original cutscene ended on, while also giving the audience way more space to notice the stiffness of the animations when you make them everything the player can see. A lot of great ideas with the storyboarding here, but not everything needs to be changed.
Maria's model and her UVs didn't seem to have the best transition from Shadow Gens to here. Maybe a custom model in a similar vain to Sonic and Shadow can go a long way here. That, or some fun, good'ol custom shading for Maria. Not an ideal solution but a lot of design elements from Shadow gens are lost when porting over to UE5. (The eyes took a massive hit, especially.)
I think the shot of them running towards the escape pod should feature a narrower hallway, with more frantic and fast camera movement. Right now, it seems like a stroll through a giant area. I understand you did this to reuse Shadow Gens assets, because those are the highest quality ones we have of the ARK, but I think custom work needs to be done for this. Especially since it breaks continuity with every other interpretation we see of Maria getting shot.
Speaking of Maria getting shot, I believe a fun way to do it would be to have the red blinking show the moment the gun is fired, and the next shot we see is her panting. I think this keeps the suspense of her getting shot going on for just a bit longer, and the player seeing her injured and panting the next shot, it would leave a lot to the viewer's imagination, which is often a lot more resonating and brutal than anything you can realistically show on screen.
Also, idk where else to post this, but the Shadow fight has some neat ideas but really, really drags near the end.

Damn dude you exceeded the mark. I’m 30 years old. I bought the original game on Dreamcast in 2001. You outdid and surpassed expectations from a diehard Sonic fan. Well done i hope to see the full game come out.

ОтветитьI don't know how you did it, but you made these linear levels feel open world. Like city escape, I feel like I COULD go between the buildings. In the Sonic v shadow fight, I feel like I COULD jump off the arena and just run away. I cant do any of it, but I feel like I could.
ОтветитьUnreal Engine really blows. The Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) looks like ass and the lighting is boring.
While I'm at it, here are some other comments and criticisms related to the game:
- I feel like Sonic gets horizontal movement too easily in the air (speeding up where it feels like he should be slowing down without using the air dash).
- I love the scale and overall idea of each level redesign, while keeping what made the originals so iconic.
(It's minor, but I wish you still went down a chute on a surfboard, crashing through a bunch of stuff instead of freefalling at the end of Metal Harbor, though.)
- I get the idea behind Shadow's cutscene, and it's a great one... But it feels goofy, and I can't put my finger on why. Maybe the way Maria runs forward towards nothing in particular and gets capped immediately? I'm pretty sure she's supposed to get shot specifically after pulling the lever that jettisoned Shadow, and was just weary beforehand due to her illness.
- I don't like the length of Shadow's Chaos Spear attack during his fight, nor that it makes it impossible to hit him regardless of what you do (unlike the other boss who, in spite of flying "out of range," can still be hit if you play right. Also unlike any of the bosses in the original SA2 - you're always supposed to be in control and capable of hitting them, it's just a matter of finding out how to hit them).
- ...Why does Shadow's movement speed get affected by his own Chaos Control? He should still be going at full speed, even if Sonic isn't.
Other than those, I do think it shows promise. The models and animations look sick and the controls are tight. It's a phenomenal proof of concept and extremely well-done for a fan game.
It's clear you and your team really love SA2.

ОтветитьPlaying on PC:
1) Wish I could put the game on windowed fullscreen, so I can type this up as soon as I finish a level. Also, hitting "enter" in level select seems to change from fullscreen to windowed with a smaller resolution.
City Escape:
1) WASD controls seem a bit TOO responsive, in the sense that it doesnt feel like your strafe movement is completely linear while at a full sprint. I think it might feel better, when running quickly, that when strafing while moving forward, movement is more of curve keeping you from going at a full 45 degrees when moving around
2) I like I can move my POV with mouse, but I'm starting to notice that when you lock on to something, your screen jerks to face what you're targeting during a jump. This kinda broke immersion.
3) Is Vsync turned on? I hate Vsync and wish I could turn it off to decrease input latency
4) I find myself jumping on rails when I don't intend to. That's also broken immersion a couple of times.
5) Running from the GUN truck at the very beginning, when I rolled under the checkpoint, the controls stayed the same causing me to run right into the truck at the beginning. I feel like it should change to reverse controls during this scene to prevent that from happening.
Bigfoot fight:
1) Only critique is camera lock on target can be really rough, especially if you run directly under bigfoot. I like the stylistic choice of sticking to the original game (I get nostalgia just playing the level, lol), but there were at least 3 times I got stuck under bigfoot because I couldn't WASD quickly enough out of it to match the changing camera. Perhaps implementing a game mechanic that allows you to switch between freecam or camera lock by hitting Left click might help with this.
Shadow Fight:
1) Same as bigfoot fight. When I jump over shadow, sometimes I get stuck spinning around. Having a camera (un)lock mechanic starting to seem more viable
2) A couple of times I know I hit shadow, but it didn't register. I also remember the pathing for shadow being a lot more difficult to avoid, but thats could be because I was a kid
3) Voice dialogue getting consumed by the music a bit.
4) I remember during this fight, there was a lot of jump hitting and bouncing off shadow. In the current game, it seems to jump to a cutscene of both sonic and shadow spinning at eachother and breaking off. Breaks immersion for me.
Metal Harbor: (One of my favorite levels growing up)
1) The loops on keyboard are difficult to go all the way around due to the changing camera angle. Lost momentum once; character stutters back to center just about every time
2) At this point, realizing maybe having a setting to give infinite lives for testing reasons. Or a command console to open up. Frustrating to start at the beginning each time, lol.
3) Difficult to grab onto the handles going up each platform after rolling under.
4) Miss getting the green upgrade thing on the flight deck (I know that'll come later, lol)
Overall: Loving it so far! I might be misremembering, but I think Sonic has a bit more upward velocity whenever jump-striking an enemy. Camera angles stuff was breaking immersion. Ability to freecam with the mouse seems inconsistent, especially if there's a target there.
Keep up the work. I'm looking forward to a second demo. If you think it'd be helpful for me to replay the demo, screen record the playthrough and give live commentary, please feel free to let me know. I'll keep my eyes out for a new demo. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! Hope these suggestions help!
