TikTok has been removed from Google Play and Apple App Store after the Ministry of Information Technology decided to ban the social media app in India along with 58 other apps. While new users cannot download the TikTok app, existing users on both Android and iOS can still continue to use it. Having said that, theres no clarification yet as to how this ban will actually be put to effect. TikTok is among the first to respond to the ban by removing its app as other popular apps like WeChat, UC Browser, CamScanner, Shareit, Likee, Xender are still present on App Store and Google Play. We have been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government. Further if we are requested to in the future we would not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. Explaining the reason for banning TikTok and 58 other apps in India, the Ministry of Information Technology in its official statement said, We have received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is
