This is a deceptively difficult song to do. It has a certain groove that is difficult to get into as a solo guitarist. And it moves like a horse arrow on a railroad track through a ghost fog. Ive tried to play it many times and always fall flat. Mine comes across about like Steve’s here. No knock to Mr Earle, I have all his albums. Its just not an easy song to make drive without some jangle and slide.

Steve is a legend, so I'll probably be attacked for this criticism. But where the F did he get the chords he's playing there? Surely not from Greg. Not even close to being correct.

I discovered Steve Earle about a year ago. I saw him in a video clip with Rodney Crowell who I’ve followed since he was first part of Emmy Lou Harris band. And I said, wait…who’s that guy. I looked for other videos and found Copperhead Road, first with line dancers, then Steve’s video with his band, the Dukes. I would love to see him in concert. I’m just a few years younger than him and wondered how Have I missed his music all these years. He’s going to be in Colorado at the Caveman Music Festival on Sept 3rd. Hope I can go!

One one hand he went through some dark stuff/addictions, and might have produced more and had more radio play if he’d played the game, but then he wouldn’t be the true musical genius he is. I can’t imagine any musician say they don’t respect him, even if it’s not their style.

Maaaaan I had to learn this song on the spot.... I was playing a cancer benefit for a bunch of bikers.... they had me playin up on an old flatbed trailer and a few of em came up and said HEY... PLAY MIDNITE RIDER!!!! I was gettin my mouth ready to somehow tell these guys I didn't know the song... when about ten more came over and said YEAH!!!!!PLAY MIDNITE RIDER!!!! So.... I learned it out of thin air.... did ok and they didn't kill me.... thanks Greg!!!!!

Watch this at least every other week, great performance of a great song. After a while though I get more and more irritated by the 2 min narrative before the music begins, almost like its robbing the song of its virtue. Not that what he is saying isnt true or that I dont value the perspective it is almost certainly well informed ... just ruins the feeling for some reason. Prolly just me though.

my first true love was a steve earle song. guitar town lit a fire in me that still burns to this day, and every night I open my set, and close my set with covers of steve and dukes, with some of my own stories filling in the space between. my first, best, and most important influence as a songwriter. thank you so much for being you, and doing what you do. I hope you continue to travel and write, and perform for as long as you still find joy, or release or sanctuary in it. peace be unto you. all the best,
