The cryptomatte AOV automatically creates mattes for your entire scene based on object or material names.

To setup a cryptomatte in Arnold for Cinema4D…

Open up the render settings and scroll down to the “Advanced” tab. Add a cryptomatte shader to the AOV shaders list using the arrow button.

This will add a cryptomatte shader to your scene.

Then navigate to the AOVs tab under the Arnold settings. Scroll down to the cryptomatte AOVs section and add all three to your active AOVs list.

Select the display driver in the object manager and change the driver settings to EXR. The cryptomatte needs an EXR driver to operate correctly. Select the Merge AOVs checkbox.

Set a file path in the render settings for the regular image and then set the file path of your AOV driver.

Hit render.

Import the finished render into after effects. Under “Import Options” select create composition. Then click the import button.

De-select pre-compose layers under the second “Import Options” window.

Open up the AOVs composition and copy the crypto object, material and asset layer into the beauty render comp.

Select the crypto object layer and the Cryptomatte effect. Click the settings and Click “OK” at the bottom right of the window that pops up.

Hold shift and left click the objects in your scene that you want to add to the matte. When you’re done change the output from Colors to Matted Colors. Now you can use this layer as a luma matte for your render.
