There is at least one real life instance where somebody actually got lost in the backrooms and died there. A 71 old man, suffering from dementia, accidentally entered a staff door in a mall in Sydney, Australia, and got lost in the labyrinth of hallways and stairwells that all looked the same and doors that couldn't be opened. His dementia prevented him from following the signs to the only accessable exit door that was far away, on another floor. Nobody knows how long he exactly wandered alone through this concrete maze.
