I use white vinegar too, cheap and cheerful. Then I hold a Stanley blade in the thread and turn in and out until it's done.

That seems aggressive when tolerances are so tight. Have you tried using a chemical solution? There are many commercially available that remove rust.

Good tip. Lathe will work too. Kroil is excellent for taking off rust

I just soak them in a cup or dish with vinegar for 8-12 hours and brush them off, but that's just for minor corrosion spots on screws
