How To Build A Ford C4 3-Speed Automatic Transmission

I wonder how much transmission fluid he gets on his cigar and inadvertently smokes.

Has anyone got a recommendation on manuals for this type of stuff? I have a 66 Ford custom 500 with a dual range c4 I'd like to do a refresh on.

I noticed that you didn't torque the valve body or when putting the valve body into the transmission

This is HANDS DOWN one of the best instructional videos on anything I have ever seen...I am restoring a 1972 Gran Torino Sport with is a C4 (I think) and after watching this I feel like I might givie it a go. I used to be a mechanic for Ford in the 80's but I did not do transmissions. Great video.

I’m gonna be dead honest, this video just saved my build. I’ve had a C5 (basically a C4 with a different torque converter) sitting around for a while and I finally decided to rebuild it as of recent. Turns out, while it was sitting I actually managed to lose some parts. But I gotta say I’m happier knowing I lost parts than I would be with a broken transmission :)

Stumbled onto your video while researching a rebuild for 71 c4. Excellent video, should be all I need to guide me. I plan on getting a rebuild kit from JEGS unless you can point me in a better direction for a quality kit with bands, clutches, gaskets, etc. First thing on my list, though, is a good box of Cuban cigars rolled in Canada!

Totally puts you on the right track to understand c4 and c5 and what's involved in overhaul. But Joe doesn't go into the nitty gritty, so this is overview and nor a how to instruction guide. There are things like end-play specs, selective thickness thrust washers to know about, etc. Even the clutch packs have important tolerances and selective snap ring thicknesses to know about for proper function and longevity. I'm taking nothing away from master Joe's wisdom and quality of work. Just seeing many comments like "I rebuilt my c4 with no experience, just with this video". Pointing out that this video isn't meant for that. I have original ford shop manual and 4 hour overhaul video series from badshoe productions. So the omissions regarding tolerances and finer details really stood out to me.

Nice video! I own 68 Mustang with C4 and in recent time I noticed the C4 struggle to shift in 1st at higher RPMs (when engine is cold or I press more throttle) and the car have jerky start. Do you have any idea what can be the problem? I plan rebuild the C4 but how can I be sure that the C4 is pre 69 and also how can I check what model is torque converter so I can change it with new one?
