I collect games because it's a HOBBY! Same reason why other people collect stuff that people might think is dumb. Nowadays, games are becoming more digital and I can actually hold the game and say its mine and that no game company can take it away. I'm already half way in the Gamecube library and I really do want to collect all of them, to hold on to an era of gaming where game companies want to experiment and try new ideas, as opposed to the bland era of what we have today. Unlike most collectors, I play them and have in fact beaten many of them unlike most others who collect and never play them.

Also helps that I bought games back than that were worth almost nothing and all of a sudden skyrocketed in value today. 😎🍷

I get where you are coming from. IMO collecting is a fun hobby.....when you collect things you want to use. That sealed switch game you bought and stuck on the shelf, I can never. When I buy or download a game, I am wanting to play that game either the next day off or right then and there. To collect just for the sake of collection is a silly thing for people to do. End of the day, its their money. Hell Rick might fold and buy it for 15k later, I am still trying to think how games are now $80 bucks a pop now.
I still love going to local mom and pop shops, buying a game, playing it, have it in my collection for a time, but then trade it back in. I always wanted to collect the ps2 library, but I have nor the cash or time to play them. Plus Rule of rose is mind numbing in price.

Fair, but if you think about it isn't all retro collecting dumb if you can just download it all for free anyways? 😂 I don't feel that way, but many might.

I've recently felt the same about pokemon. I was on track to complete a master set, and realized I had a bunch of cards and pokemon I didn't even like. Now I'm a species card collector.

Sealed games confuses me. Dont get that at all

As a kid it sounds cool, but when you get wiser you realise how collecting an entire consoles game libary is just crazy and stupid. Pat the NES Punk is one to pretty much made that his entire personality, yet barely anyone cares.
Meanwhile I'm over here just happy to get the stuff I love. If not it's weird and hidden gems, with some being good games.

Being a collecter of many different things, ive never had the urge to actually have “full” sets of things i just like getting stuff i like and tbh i buy all my games virtually to A: save space and B: reduce waste because 90-98% of the games made and sold ur losing money when trying to sell them once ur done so yeah collecting itself shouldnt be measured by what the collection is worth but more of the memories attached to the collecting.

I tried to go for an entire set of Atari Lynx games at one point, as there is only 70 something game for the system. I got about a third of the way. Then I wondered, why the heck am I doing this? I don't play this shit, so I decided to sell it off and got about what I spent on it all, thus recupping my loses.

I follow two retro channels that are trying for full PS2 sets lol , but yeah I wanted full n64 and dreamcast sets back in 2014. I got both , sold most of the games in 2018 why ... didn't want them , didn't play them , didn't care for them.

I put off going for a full set of PS1 titles for years because other things took priority. Now that I have my shit lined out, I’m going for my dream and doing it within reason. This isn’t just shelf filler to me. Every game, even a sports title has had an experience for me. I always tell people it’s your money, do whatcha want and I stick by that sentiment. I started to collect NES games again, CIB only, and have like 20 so far and Im almost done...
I have the games I love and played as a kid and a couple games I never did but will play this summer with my family.

I have 6 CIB N64 games because they're the games I actually like and have fond memories of. All I need for the console. People turn collecting into more of a game than the games they're collecting. They're definitely not playing a complete set. If they just wanted to play a complete set they make everdrives for that. I get that some people just have the desire to collect, I've definitely done some collecting in my time, but I never have and never will understand spending money on games you don't like or don't plan to play. But I guess that's hypocritical because I definitely have a backlog. I'll get around to it. 🤷

As a collector of an individual game series, full set collecting seems very odd to me. Why are you buying games you have no interest in playing. I get having a few things just to have to have it. But a full set, that’s a bit much just to have

I usually collect cool games like Mario (Donkey Kong), Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man (all incarnations), and Kirby. Not purple dinosaur games like Barney's hide and seek game for example. The more you focus on the games you like in physical form. The more room you have in your house or apartment. For example, you could put arcade1up cabinets in the space where all of the unnecessary filler games are stored.

Absolutely agree. What is the point of collecting anything for it just to sit on a shelf and do nothing?. I only buy games that I am going to play. The other thing I buy is dvds, I have quite a few of those, but when buying dvds I only buy ones that I know I will watch more than 10 times. I save about $500+ a month doing this.

I would say the Neo-Geo library would be a good set because 90% of the games are fucking classic but the cost of full Neo-Geo set would be insane

Set collecting is cringe. The only achievement is spending money. I’ve met these people in the 64 world and tried to have conversations with them. They don’t know the library. They haven’t played Sin and Punishment, and shrug at a CIB Bangai-o or CIB Evangelion. “What’s 40 Winks? I must have Star Soldier, but nah haven’t tried it. Rocket Robot was expensive, but I haven’t tried it… yet.” Yet, yet, yet, yet. The damn fools won’t ever play their games because it wasn’t about that. Shame.

SET COLLECTING 4 LIFE!!!!! if you started this in the late 90s or early 2000s it wasn’t an issue. As games rose in price this became the narrative and people began to narrow their focus, which is cool. Things evolve. I don’t think twice about what others collect or what they do with their money. I agree. I made a goal for myself to buy every 1st party Nintendo GameCube games a few years ago, and even THAT I realized was too much and not something I actually wanted to do. Too much money, too many games I probably wouldn’t even play or enjoy.

I kinda have this problem. Just laid $75 for 27 SNES games to help build up my collection. But they’re all sports…. To be fair, some of the hockey and baseball games for SNES are pretty clutch. But yeah, set building is awful

The the only games I see worth collecting majority of are GBA/GBC/GB, PS2, XBOX360, & GAMECUBE. I would have included PC because I loved so many games on there but there are some limitations to play some of them now. I like collecting games because theirs fun to look at and I’ve had found memories playing them. Always make a limit on your stash & splurging habits.

Personally I feel a catered collection is better then complete sets. Also stadium events is just a variant.

As someone with three full sets, I say do it if that system truly means a lot to you. I have a full N64 set, because it was my first console, and it means more than anything else in gaming to me. I have a full Wii U set because I absolutely love how weird and unique it is. Both the N64 and Wii U full sets are to experience the highest highs and lowest lows, to have a full scale experience of everything those consoles gave us.

Third set is the Evercade, because I support what the company is doing by focusing on physical cartridges, so I buy everything to help fund them.

I've been collecting games since the Atari 2600 days back in 1977. And many systems has followed for me. However, I will never collect full video game sets. Most (if not all) systems have trash games. Great video, Steve!!!

Great points Steve. I agree to an extent, but I do think the concept of owning every game released for a system is cool. I think that's what separates the mindsets of collecting vs playing video games. Most of us do both. Also from a preservation standpoint I think there is validity to keeping physical copies preserved. Having every game for a system on a shelf seems like an obvious goal to accomplish and would be amazing to see in person. The logistics of dealing with insane prices of course is what ruins it. I agree that people should have the games they want to play or collect and call it good. That's what I do. I don't pay whatever it takes to get a full set, but just pick up whatever is new or interesting I don't have and can add to the pile.

One more point to make, how many nes games are worth having!! How many garbage games are on the nes that you would own if you owned a complete set? Way more garbage than good games! What do you think the ratio of good games versus bad games on nes

it not neutral to tell someone to collect whatever they like. but it a elitist dickweed of someone to tell people they should and shouldn't collect or how to collect. also not all collectors are alike it would totally lame if everyone called the same stuff.

I am a set collector and have had a complete NES set since 2008. I paid $1250 for my SE. Collecting complete sets isn’t stupid. Collecting complete sets at these prices are stupid. There is a distinction. So people who collect sports cards shouldn’t collect the complete series (IE 2025 Tops)? Should they only collect the “good” players?? The reason we know about “hidden gems” is because somebody got the set and tried the games. I wouldn’t collect the NES set now due to price, but set collecting gives you a goal. I got my set for me and my happiness, not to brag to other nerds. I do understand where you come from though. If it was just about the games. Get an Everdrive and call it a day.

I mostly agree with you, but I’m not a fan of gatekeeping or telling others how to participate in the hobby they love. I think collecting an entire set just to say you have it or for clout like you said is stupid, that I def agree with.

But I love the n64 it was the first system I ever bought with my own money when I was in middle school. So I started collecting for it back in 2007 and have picked up games as I went slowly over time. I am about 20 games away from having the entire North American library (the 2 heavy hitters I’m missing are sculptors cut and stunt racer) so I figure I might as well go for it. Now I wouldn’t pay the price for sculptors cut I see on eBay but if I can find it for a deal or if someone is selling a collection and I am able to get it for an ok price I would complete my library. So I think blankety saying anyone that has an entire set is stupid is wrong.
