The term "Patripassianism" comes from two Latin words: "pater" (father) and "passio" (suffering). It was used by early Christian writers to describe the belief that the Father suffered with the Son.

Patripassianism was considered a heresy by many early Christian theologians, including Tertullian, Hippolytus, and Origen. They argued that the doctrine was incompatible with the belief in the Trinity, which holds that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct but equal persons in the Godhead.

Some Patripassianists believed that the Father actually became incarnate in Jesus Christ and suffered in his human body. Others believed that the Father's divine nature suffered in sympathy with the Son's human nature.

Patripassianism was most prevalent in the second and third centuries AD, but its influence declined over time as the doctrine of the Trinity became more widely accepted.

Patripassianism has been associated with other heresies, such as Modalism, which teaches that God is one person who reveals himself in different modes or manifestations, and Sabellianism, which holds that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are different roles or aspects of the same person.

Despite its status as a heresy, some Christian thinkers have defended Patripassianism as a legitimate expression of the belief in God's love and solidarity with humanity. They argue that the doctrine emphasizes the depth of God's involvement in human suffering and redemption, and that it underscores the unity of the Trinity in its salvific work.
