Rich Gilbank - From Garage™ to a garage: Building a Startup After Years at Shopify
What happens when you walk away from everything you thought you wanted in a career and redefine what you want?
After 5 years with Shopify, growing from ~275 to ~4000 employees, going public, and establishing offices around the world, I left my cushy job as Developer Lead to pursue building a startup of my own.
Several questions arose - What tech stack should I use to build a completely new business from the ground up? What stance should we take on remote vs local teams? How do I find a better work-life balance when my work is so entwined in my life? And finally, can they see I'm wearing pajama pants in this video call?
Rich is a Software Developer-turned CTO at Jupiter, a pre-launch startup helping entrepreneurs run their businesses. Previously, he was a Developer Lead at Shopify, where he built products, teams, and experiments for 5 years after the acquisition of the UX agency Jet Cooper.
