I found transmission assembly lube works better, breaks up in the oil faster it’s basically thicker Vaseline and lasts longer then prelube during startup.
ОтветитьUncle Tony obviously has a strong skill set and high knowledge level in this craft but he always seems to be in a hurry and I feel out of breath. It kind of gets my nerves in a bunch. Love his show regardless, he's a great mentor for me otherwise.😊👍
ОтветитьI love your perfect teaching. You have helped me a lot.
Thanks for sharing this
great vid as ever - are 2 part crank seals common on us motors? seems weird!
ОтветитьDoes he have a video for doing the measurments?
ОтветитьLearning a ton from this series 👍🏼👍🏼. Thanks Tony
ОтветитьA couple things: I will always torque my crank before pistons, so you can check ease of spin. AND - You should have mentioned the BB Dodge has the little hole to give some oil to the opposite piston, whereas Chevy doesn't. Dodge you'd have to turn the pistons on the rods to install backwards, but Chevy doesn't matter.
ОтветитьBrilliant ,you take me back 50yrs to my apprenticeship my tutor worked exactly like you except he was always singing.
ОтветитьThe best thing i did when i started building more engines (subarus) was to buy a piston ring compressor that was specifically designed for the size bores used. its got a super thick bottom so you can't score the deck of the block. Not as much of an issue when you're using cast iron, but when you're working with aluminum you can save yourself a lot of heartache
ОтветитьHi uncle Tony, can you please make a video for a jspanese engine like toyota?
ОтветитьIt’s great to see you assemble the engine with hand tools. This generation has these fancy battery powered tools. They can’t feel what is happening when the bolts are installed. That and they are just too damn lazy to turn wrenches.
ОтветитьPissed in pants=piston pants. I like it
ОтветитьI wish I could work with these guy for some time.
ОтветитьAh, two extra piece’s of pie for that leaking seal, 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
ОтветитьOMG get a rubber dead blow! lol
ОтветитьHarbor Freight piston ring compressor? You must be rich! You fancy! LOL. I got mine from the jungle website. LOL
Great videos. I'm re-learning a lot from you as I build a 350 Chevy. Thanks! Be safe!
The general info here is decent for a budget build. The couple of things I disagree with here is seating the main caps by tightening down the bolts instead of tapping them down fully onto the registers first. Also, using an unknown lubricant on the bolt threads can give you incorrect main journal shape due to varying final bolt stretch. Regular engine oil should be used if the lubricant used for setting main and rod bore size / clearance is unknown. The type of lubricant used to torque the main and rod bores can greatly affect bearing crush. I'd also first torque the mains before installing rods so you can check for free and smooth crankshaft rotation once the mains are locked down.
I disagree on installing offset pin pistons backwards. I’ve done testing with this myself on various Ford Windsor engines and found absolutely no difference using production pistons. I worked for a shop which built engines for Roush and Yates. Both have spent a good bit of time and money trying to get even the smallest advantage with their engines if the sanctioning rules allow for it. We've seen alot of so called cheats in engine building which for the most part didn't make any observed repeatable differences. Most of the time we concentrated on reliability over everything else so the engine could be pushed as hard as possible without failure.
Regarding the piston install, you should also be able to push the pistons in by hand with your thumbs using a halfway decent ring compressor. Even with higher tension rings, this wasn't an issue. Using a hammer handle isn't a good idea. Fixed ring compressors aren't expensive and allow for very smooth piston installs without the worry of breaking an oil control ring.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TEACHING
ОтветитьUTG - what say you regarding cleaning threads: Use a thread chaser or a tap? And why...
ОтветитьUncle Tony ! You didn't mention clocking the ring gaps !?😦?!
ОтветитьCan you do a video showing how to gap the rings
ОтветитьWheres your nitrel gloves? This must be a very low out put 383! Well i guess all 383s are! So no studs needed or arp! My neighbor thought he was gonna be smart & watched your video & didnt switch the rods & blew his engine because he put the pistons in backwards! That slap cant be a good thing! I wouldnt dare do a non bushed rod!
ОтветитьThis guy has multiple issues I can't even start to begin...
ОтветитьDriven makes good lube
ОтветитьThe way God intended for it to be 😂😂😂
ОтветитьDo you have the other parts of this video somewhere?
ОтветитьI enjoy watching your videos could you do one on how to tell if a bottom end has too much damage to save.
ОтветитьI couldn't watch this video. It's like your audience was meant to be 5th graders or something or someone has never seen an engine before. Not one taken apart. Anyway, I'm sure this video is very helpful to someone who has never been inside of an engine before, but the guys that watch this show aren't those guys the guys that watch this show? Most of them know quite a bit about building motors I would say so this was a hard watch for me but I'm sure to some beginner out there that's never built the motor. It was helpful.
ОтветитьNice , I can watch three times. Jump cuts and intros blasts of music is distracting. Thanks UTG.
ОтветитьThis comment section proves that the only thing more insufferable than computer nerds are car nerds. Everyone screeches whenever Uncle Tony does something differently than how they do it, no matter how trivial.
ОтветитьI can see how this becomes fun with a large enough space to work in. Cramped garage not so much.
ОтветитьI'd be afraid not to torque the crank down first, crank spins freely with the bolts snug, can't tell if the crank is freely going to spin, because now you have pistons installed. There's always the first one.
ОтветитьThank you❤
I would never have been able to build a gy6 engine and now a chevy from a 2500 suburban
With out people sharing..
Im greatful for this information age rn cause i got trust isuues and most people suck so real life friends who know... Well i ain't got none🤷
But i got yous!!!♥️♥️♥️🇺🇸
uncle tony you are a star your tutorial is so easy to understand so glad i have found this helped me no end great content
ОтветитьSo no gauge to check if Crank is Centred. Just whack it, and guess?
ОтветитьWhy does the crank woble on the block on the 440 dodge engine when its assembled
ОтветитьShow how you do tolerance between crank and block
ОтветитьAwesome teacher 🙂
ОтветитьThanks Uncle Tony, I'm thinking of tackling my first rebuild. Already have a 350 sbc one piece almost torn down. I've done a couple Muncie rebuilds, some light engine work, but this helps me a ton! Thanks again!
ОтветитьBuilding a 318, do I trim the tails off the main bearing seal before installing oil pan??
ОтветитьDidint turn engine in last 3 caps
ОтветитьYes! Always check your crankshaft after machining. Don't count on the operator to clean out the oil passages. That debris will grenade your engine on start up.
ОтветитьTim, i have an81 imperial which islikeamirada it hasa 318 2bbl carb. Ithas hadthe catlytic converter remove. I am thinking 4 barrel withdual exhust toincrease pergotma e. Anyideas you may have. This is .yhoyrod now..
ОтветитьThanks for sharing your vast knowledge and experience!!!!
ОтветитьThanks for the great video!
ОтветитьI have a question please tell me the reason for flipping pistons!
ОтветитьSo...listen,I love the fact that you're not jamming home security systems and hair care products down our throats.that being said I would like to see Uncle Tony have some kind of sponsorship from day O'Reilly's or something like that.I just think Tony deserves more income, also part of the deal would have to be honest about their products.
