This is great from at least three perspectives that I can see. 1. Regarding the soft box, it's a great job building and using your upholstery skills. (I love to watch skilled craftsmen using their talents and experience.). 2. It's a great addition for your studio; it will add dimension to your videography. And third, It's quite a cost effective project. This soft box is a lot of bang for the bucks you invested. Last year, I added upholstery to our shop, as we are building furniture for our house. For months now, I've been watching your videos and the Fabricator is on our new-tool purchase list. Not only have I learned a lot watching your channel, I now have a great appreciation for your machines. As I am now retired, 32 years ago, I sold my photography studio where we catered to the furniture industry. Your soft box, with the 5600K bulbs is awesome. When you mentioned the price of the "commercially manufactured" soft boxes, the price for the box is one thing; then there are lots of add-ons. As I mentioned above, I am learning upholstery. I came to the video for the upholstery and I thoroughly enjoyed the soft box . . .Thanks for sharing.

I would add that reflective foil behind the tubes and on the sides would give you a much more even and brighter output.

Thanks for this video and the detailed steps and materials list.
I am sure this diffuses light well enough, and with the size, I wonder if there is anything comparable to the Nylon 200D fabric you used. I'm curious, as I have used plastic shower curtains before and they seem to diffuse light even more so than this Nylon! Obviously the size it limited, but the reason I call it out is I can still see the light fixtures in the box and curious if maybe a secondary inner layer of nylon would help with eliminating the visable light fixtures inside. That said, let me know if you've found any other type of fabric with gooddiffusion properties! Right now, plastic shower curtain seem best for smaller projects, but curious what you think about larger projects. I'd like to have a portion of my studio ceiling as an entire softbox. It's 7' x 18'
Have a great day!

Good project. I've made a lot of soft boxes for photography. For efficient light output the inside of the box should always be reflective. This can be as simple as aluminum foil. Especially the back (top). Your box probably loses about half the light of sources placed inside.
The other things I've learned over the years are that almost all light fixtures are terrible, (yes all of them), Internal reflections that don't direct light outward (waste), horrible glare to the sides. Ideally was should walk into a work space, look up at the ceiling and see no light. It should all be directed to the work area. Glare is fatiguing and interfering. This is why some medical offices are so calming. They use good ceiling fixtures with grids that direct light downward but cut it from spreading out to the sides.
The Velcro system is great. To make it super flat always follow the screen/canvas on the frame method. Stretch and attach the centers of the sides and then work the attacxhments towards the corners. Any wrinkles disappear at the corner. (This is less critical with screens then it is with canvas. It is one of those essential tricks.)
