Печально и трагично ходить на таком корыте. Русские "Мир-1" и "Мир-2" лучшие глубинные подводные аппараты. Но капитализм не приемлет логики, поэтому он - зло!

The destruction of the device began at the place of bonding of titanium and fiberglass. This is clearly visible on the wreckage that was unloaded from the rescue ship. Titanium cannot be glued together. Those who made this device did not know that titanium does not stick well.

Funny thing, you are the first person to mention the incorrect winding method. What were these people thinking?

this is probably a very daft question.

seeing the Titan was a submersible and not a submarine and it was just diving/dropping not venturing around, and the massive amount of risk involved in a venture 4km below the surface of the ocean.

Why then was it not tethered to the mother ship via cable? At least that way finding/retrieving would be easier and it would facilitate constant comms from mother ship to the vehicle itself.

thanks to anyone who can fill the blanks for me! :)

People are looking in the wrong direction. What happened to the Titan was water leaked into the bus. When that happened, they were left with no power and the Titian went on a vertical nose dive. The five people were aware of the situation in the bus bay. Both A-B Bus compromised. That were the sounds they heard when Titian was talking to mother ship

An opinion only:
Not all on board were truly aware of their impending instant death. Main concern for at least two or three was rescue efforts from the sea floor. The effect of an implosion is now well known due to this human caused tragedy. This sub had descended to Titanic’s depth several times. Perhaps two or even three knew what was imminent.

I appreciate how you pointed out the way the carbon fiber hull was laminated together. It’s important to note that materials like carbon fiber and Kevlar gain their strength from the weave pattern. I know that carbon fiber is a different material but even things like armor are most effective with an overlapping weave like pattern and the tighter the weave the stronger it is.

Worse yet, the Titan was being towed out to the dive site in the rough North Atlantic putting even more stress on it's components from getting tossed around. Putting acoustic alarms along the carbon fiber tube was nothing more than a 'fatality imminent' warning. By contrast I've read that when 'Alvin' was built in the 60's three steel hemispheres were built with the 'worst' one being subjected to destructive testing to find it's failure potential. The 'worst' one survived the test chamber itself blowing up at 8,000 psi with the hydraulic fluid vaporizing into a fog and the top hatch blowing off, flying through the roof and coming back down on top off the test chamber denting several feet thick concrete. Experience, redundancy, testing, re-testing, are all going out the window in the name of 'diversity' and 'thinking outside the box'. Just look at Boeing and airlines right now-I ain't flying for sure.

CF pressurized air tanks are used all the time. The snag is that CF is strong in tension, not compression. The submarine was seeing high pressure from the outside, unlike air tanks made from CF. So, this sub's history serves as a case study of what not to do; including what arrogance does to those who ignore known good engineering practice, and the laws of nature.

Laying the fibers in one direction was extremely stupid.
This means that in one direction all forces were transferred only by the resin.
Any bending moment along the capsule must have caused microcracks.
Fortunately, they died painlessly because they were more compressed than in a diesel engine.
This is a faster death than sending a signal through the nervous system.

The minute I saw that submersible, I thought, "Rush HAD to be kidding!" It even looked like a jury-rigged piece of crap. Rush could do as he pleased with his own risk--too bad he decided to take four others with him. I think he knew from the start how things would end but didn't care who or how many he killed along with himself.
