Hi, Steve and Nan! I don't (yet) have a book, like John Dileo, but my personal and professional research experience on Classic Hollywood matches those of people such as Dileo, Robert Osborne, Eddie Muller, etc. I'd enjoy the chance to match my knowledge of both screwball comedy, film noir, and Paramount Pictures history. As in the film business, all one needs is an opportunity.

I'm a big fan of your podcast. I have listened to all of your episodes but one.

We can't forget that Gloria Swanson didn't get an oscar for my favorite movie, Sunset Blvd.

"The Band Wagon" is my favorite filmed musical. When it comes to pure dance numbers, "Dancing in the Dark" is the best, paid tribute to by Steve and Gilda on SNL.

As kids, "That's Entertainment" was the in-flight movie when a certain famed podcaster and I went to Hawaii with our sister and our dad.

I agree with you Nan, how did Glenn Close lose the Oscar for her performance in "The Wife". I was blown away by her performance. I think that was the year "The favourite" with Oliva Colman won. I personally did not like the movie or her portrayal of Queen Anne. Just my opinion, but this wasn't even close. Glenn Close moved me in her performance.

This is a fascinating topic because the answer to the central question is so impossible to answer. Assuming the actor's performance is in fact outstanding, there are only so many actors that can be nominated in any year. This means that it really comes down to personal preference. Who can justify or explain something as intrinsically subjective as that. The reasons that the nominators could have for their choices are almost endless, so we can never really know for sure. Frustrating, but true!

For me personally it is Jean Peters in "Pickup on South Street".
She was absolutely incredible in this movie!

I'm not sure I should admit it here, but despite having been a die-hard movie buff for nearly 60 years now, I have never been enthusiastic about the academy awards. Actually, the bright spot of your program today for me was when you focused in on John Wray's and Emory Parnell's outstanding contributions in brief appearances. Maybe there's a book there...

Boris Karloff had what i felt were two brilliant performances in the black room 1935 and the body Snatchers 1945.

Such a fantastic episode and Mr. Dileo was such a delight to hear in the interview! Now I'm going to look for his books at my local bookstore ❤

Steve and Nan thank you for your discussion with expert John DiLeo. I was not familiar with his classic cinema books, and he was very interesting. The Oscar voters have chosen the wrong actors and actresses throughout their 90 plus years history.

I am now going to place some of your books on my Christmas wish list! I have to say my favourite film is, " It's a Wonderful Life." It just speaks to me on every level. I love That's Entertainment..all 3 plus That's Dancing. Love The Bandwagon and I thought Jack Buchanon deserved an Oscar nod. His rendition of the play near the beginning of the film is hilarious when the other stars keep opening up the door and hear hom sell the idea to the money people. I just don't understand why Loretta Young won. All the others were so much better. I might be biased...she is not my favourite person. Another just great list. Oh..with you on Thelma Ritter. I also love the lady maid in It's a Wonderful Life but forget her name and must get back to work.

Thank you, that was fun, I saw That's Entertainment 2 at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood on the opening weekend. No movie stars but I was so enthralled.

Spectacular episode. As we said on FB, only criticism? Far too short. Could listen to the three of you for days. Sequel, or, several, indicated. Meanwhile, totally with Ms. McNamara on Glenn Close & "The Wife," carries the film in her molecules; Mr. Cubine on Donald Sutherland & "Ordinary People," unthinkable snub; and since have always regarded "The Band Wagon" as the Broadway-skewed counterpart to "Singin' in The Rain," can appreciate Mr. DeLio's POV. Elsewhere, have never understood Helena Bonham Carter not being nommed as supporting for "Howards End," Jacob Tremblay for "Room," and the administrator who missed the date on Meryl Streep's AMPAS application for "The Hours" should have been discharged. And that's just recent ones; don't get us started on the score of classic portrayals that shoulda been but weren't -- Irene Dunne in "Penny Serenade," Joel McCrea in "Sullivan's Travels," Virginia Weidler in "The Philadelphia Story," Myrna Loy in ANYTHING, we're looking at you. Ah, well, that's fodder for future episodes, right? More, please, thank you.
🎥❤️❤️❤️🎥
