I kinda see when they talk about his "moral code" almost the same way as people talk about batmans moral code. I mean literally batman had a "no kill" rule but will literally break the spine of some henchmen whos only doing shit for some crime boss just to feed his kid or something. He'll talk about how this and that is wrong but then uses those said things against people just like john does when he kidnaps and throws people into a death chamber
