Why would someone have to relinquish first place? They can both be first and second, but who gets to be first should be decided by skill, not petty ettiquete.
Infact, it would be unfair and unsportsmanlike, to hand over the first place to someone, that can't get it on his own. You don't let people win - You make them earn it, even team mates.

I think you forgot a few moments of Verstappen and Schumacher there, but I can't say I am surprised the ones listed included Alonso, Vettel, Schumacher and Senna. They were not particularly good sportsmen. Raikkonen and Button were more fair play winners, but they only won once both of them. Unfortunately F1 has never really promoted great sportsmanship and that may in part be why Senna ended up giving his life to the sport. And it is also why I have stopped watching it.
