He's back

Fan ZhengDong has acheived the Grand Slam which is every China's top TT player's dream. I think they even called him a "Super Grand Slam". Grand Slam is the trio title of Olympic, World and World Cup champion. I think Super Grand Slam adds the trio of Asian Games, Asian champion and Asian World Cup PLUS the China National Games and China national champion and China TT Super League champion.

In short, Fan ZD, like Ma Long and Zhang Jike, has won every worthwhile title there is to win except that Ma Long has done it twice over (so called double lap Grand Slam).

This is why Fan ZD is taking things easy and even though he has retired from the ITTF world rankings, lots of big advertisers are still engaging him for endorsement deals. His next big important tournament will be the China National Game in November this year. The sad fact is it looks like there is no new challenge for him anymore. One do need motivation to play their best.

Personally I think Fan ZD has benefited tremendously from 'growing up' as being part of the greatest China men's TT team in history - with Zhang Jike, Ma Long, and Xu Xin.

Sad to say, but Fan Zhengdong is suffering from not having Ma Long playing on the circuit anymore. Ma Long was Fan Zhengdong's driving force and motivation.
