No mention of the Scottish parliament which uses both systems. It actually works out quite fairly.

No mention that we would have had Labour/ liberal coalition governments for most of the last 50 years, Maggie Thatcher would never have been elected for example.

Let’s not forget the UK rejected changing the voting system in 2011 via a referendum so if parties like ReformUK want to another referendum on this then guess what? You can ask the people twice.

LibDems, Reform and Greens all won a lot of anti Tory votes. With PR these votes might not stick with the parties that won them this time.

Proportional representation would've defiently strong armed the Tories into a coalition with Reform.

"First past the post produces stable government"

Conservative party 2015-2024: "hold my beer"

(2010-2015 was relatively stable, with, gasp, a coalition (get my fainting couch). Yeah, not the greatest government in history, but it was still the least bad part of 14 years of Tory rule, and you weren't making a claim about how good the government was, were you? You were only talking about stability so STOP CHANGING THE SUBJECT)

Absolutely absurd, as someone on the center left, 70% of the UK are NOT center left liberals 😂 lack of representation can only lead to social unrest. Any voting system would be better.

It’s quite undemocratic. 61% of votes didn’t matter.

This is a pretty biased report on PR, not so subtlety favouring the status quo. One of the problems of UK democracy is that the media establishment is so conservative (with a small c).

No mention of the elephant in the room that two fifths of the registetered electorate thought allmthese parties were unworthy of there votes. A month later there are widespread riots on the streets of England. That's what happens when you have a parliament and media that misrepresent the people.

You had your chance in 2011 and ruined it. 68% wanted to keep it. That’s more clear than what Brexit produced. Either stop complaining or campaign for a new system.

How about we paint the logo of each party on a chicken and race these chickens for each seat in the parliament? The winner chicken gets the seat (I imagine the chickens will make better decisions than the current MPs).

▪︎ seats to top polling candidates
▪︎ Low turnout = small chamber

The thing that has always struck me is that one of the biggest supporters of PR, the Lib Dem’s, in many cases would have gained fewer seats. It doesn’t help them but it does represent the vote better.

No, the whole thing needs to go.

Parties will do what they want, and not what the people want.

Direct Government is no a real opportunity, the technology is available to allow us all to have a say on all policies going through parliament.

Even allowing the people to raise new laws to be considered and voted on by all.

Unfortunately, the referendum was for Alternative Vote versus First Past The Post when perhaps it should have been A Proportional System vs. FPTP, giving a mandate to discuss and perhaps trial the various systems.

Britain has a 2 party system because of UN security-council seat and nuclear military capacity, thus guaranteeing ruling party is stabile with enough seats (mostly majority) in parliament. For the same reason france has a chosen president thus one chief in command at any time. Shadow side of this system is when you vote in tyrants or an complete idiot. In france parliament is counterweight to the president, britain can only hope for the king or a military coup in such case.

At the end of ww2 the usa and the UK empire called in the experts of the day to devise the best system of govt for West Germany.. They put together a system that has worked quite well to this day. Nothing is perfect. They then went back home and changed nothing in there own states. The UK even went so far as to rebuild the house of commons to the same proportions that it previously was even thought it was well known to be not fit for purpose. You can be too hide bound by tradition. It does politicians good to have to negotiate with others rather than ride roughshod over them. Generations should not be held captive by there forebears and government should be by the people, of the people and for the people not just for the oligarchs. People should be force to think about what they want.
