If the greatest jewels are buried deepest, perhaps Footscray - the unfashionable team from the Western Suburbs - has become the AFL's most treasured gem.
On the Doorstep of extinction three years ago, the Bulldogs have lifted themselves from eternal obscurity to inject romance into a game fast becoming thoroughly professional.
In 1992, with a coach who refused to yield to the conformity of others, Footscray charged through the home and away season to finish second. they bowed out of the finals race after a gallant campaign, only one step from the Grand Final.
The Bulldogs produced the Brownlow Medallist when Scott Wynd triumphed, and presented the League with a host of sensational youngsters like Chris Grant who will take the Club into a new and exciting era. 1992 was also the year that skipper Doug Hawkins continued to defy age and injury to further enhance his wonderful reputation.
DIAMON DOGS looks back at the entire '92 season with special comments from Doug Hawkins on the year that in so many ways belonged to the Mighty Bulldogs.
