I remember seeing many in West Germany in the target yards awaiting to be towed out to be used as target practice...
At Grafenwohr specifically...
Interesting take and very good ending about tanks that never entered combat getting forgotten while being a stepping stone to the next.
ОтветитьCheck the Europe map. Colors are reversed.
ОтветитьA Patton Too Far
ОтветитьGreat to see the history of tanks!
ОтветитьNice See That M51 Super Sherman Beside the M46A1
ОтветитьMy dad shipped out as infantry to West Germany, but almost as soon as he got to his base, some colonel came by and yanked him, and about a third of his platoon, and reassigned them to a tank unit, and he ended up being an M47 driver. I've always had a soft spot for the 47 because of that.
ОтветитьWhat a wonderful look into a tank seldom seen or talked about. Thank you very much. 👍🏻👌
ОтветитьGovernment kills Patton . Then names 3 tanks after him. Ironic
ОтветитьGood show with some interesting information. In the Korean War the M-26 and M-46 were over shadowed by the British Centurion which out-gunned it and was far more agile. The M-47 did not change things and most tanks were passed on to American allies in NATO and other countries while the M-48 was adopted by the US Army. Most customers found the tank difficult to operate especially when the British introduced the Ranging MG which greatly shortened engagement times. They were not fuel efficient either.
ОтветитьThis guy HAD TO have gone to the Columbia School of Broadcasting...
ОтветитьThe vast majority of relics located on German training areas were M-47s. Ubungsplatzen.
ОтветитьRemarkable jump from the M47 to the M60, skipping over the M48 (M48A1, M48A2, M48A3), also denominated Patton.
ОтветитьSame stereoscopic rangefinder the panther 2 was supposed to have. Bet it was interesting to look through the analogue glasses.
ОтветитьI imagine there was some calibration required to maintain the accuracy of the scope with the gun. I wonder what the process was.
ОтветитьHow they decorate the Parks and City Halls foreign war post
ОтветитьWe exported them in large numbers to Japan in the 1960's to fight all the giant monsters like Godzilla and Rodan that constantly invaded their country
ОтветитьThanks for posting. Lots of interesting information.
ОтветитьThat's a King Tiger!
ОтветитьThe M47 is in my top 3 favorite tanks. Sweet video; I learned a fair bit. ':^)
ОтветитьThe M47 "Patton II" is a tribute to American industrial capability of some 70 years ago. Spec'd when it was apparent that the T48 project was taking too long, the need to stock the recently formed NATO with something better than leftover WWII vehicles that were rusting in peace in various depots, so this improvisation of a better turret and main weapon of the T42 tank, itself needing further development that there simply wasn't deemed timely enough, plopped onto the existing M46 chassis was a "quick and dirty" solution. Almost 8,800 of them were produced from 1952 to 1954, and despite a strike that shut down the Chrysler Tank Plant for several months! Was it perfect? No, but it was sufficient for its intended role. Once the problems with M48 development were resolved, these tanks were gradually delved down to Reservist and Guard units, then "sold" (mostly given away) to NATO allies. Arnold Schwarzenegger did his mandatory Austrian Army service as a tanker in a Panzer unit that had M47s, and in the 1990s, he bought the tank he'd served in and shipped it to the USA. It's combat record is mixed, it did poorly in the 1965 India-Pakistani War, but that was considered to be more due to poor tactics employed by the Pakistani commanders than any inherent defects in the type. That didn't prevent various users from upgrading their M47s with diesel powerpacks to replace the gas-guzzling AVS-1790 V12 engine (same engine as in Jay Leno's "Tank Car"), more modern fire control systems, and some even with M68 or similar 105 mm main weapons.
ОтветитьThe M47s used in the battle of the Bulge where from the Spanish Army
Ответитьi ran, lol
ОтветитьThe t-shape on the muzzle is a blast deflector, not a muzzle brake.
ОтветитьIm not so sure the M47 would have fared well against the T-54/55 series if there was a serious flare up.
ОтветитьLove your hat dude born and raised in Sheridan!
ОтветитьDefinately not a boring tank, as a kid I saw it plaster Godzilla
ОтветитьThe m47 was also used during Turkeys invasion of Cyprus
ОтветитьAt about 15 minutes in the eastern and western blocks were mislabeled I'm pretty sure.
ОтветитьYeh, but did it have patent😂😂😂
ОтветитьVery well done, thanks.
ОтветитьFun fact during the 1960s Isreal acquired M48s and Jordan acquired M47s they fought each other in the 1967 war.
ОтветитьAnother great video from Hank the tank
ОтветитьONCE AGAIN HANK THE TANK DELIEVERS ANOTHER OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I loved the Patton (movie) reference in the beginning specifically.
ОтветитьCool. Thanks.
ОтветитьWell done. Couldn't help but notice the Wyoming hat.
ОтветитьOmnomnomnom, knowledge, more, more 😀
ОтветитьMuzzle Brake needs leveling - am I the only one bothered by that?
ОтветитьGreat video, i have always found the M47 aesthetically pleasing.. i looks like how an American tank should look.
ОтветитьM47 in Iranian service? Find @thetankmuseum's movie about the Chieftain in Iranian service ... newer than the Iraqi's T-62s, but because of purges that followed the Islamic Revolution, their army's tank units couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Equipment issues didn't help
ОтветитьThere are not many combat reports about the m47 tank, but the ones I found seem like a failure at the tactical level rather than with the tank itself. For instance, in the Indo-Pakistan War, the Pakistanis used the M-47 in a major attack. The Indians knew of the plans for the attack well ahead of time and in preparation flooded the fields where the attack was planned. The Pakistanis drove the tanks in the flooded areas which then became bogged down and sitting ducks. They were subsequently easily picked off.
ОтветитьI have driven a M47 Patton.
ОтветитьIn 1962-63, in Wales ( small Celtic country west of England ), people were bemused when units of the Bundeswehr equipped with M 47s turned up to train there.
At the time, the British press had fun. American Panzers in Wales!
Colonel Hessler had 1. Panzerlied herr mayor!!!
ОтветитьI thought the advancement going from an old M60A1 rise to the M60A3 was high tech. I reenlisted for the XM1 project at FT Hood and was very intimidated when I first jumped into that XM1 as the gunner. I could not wait to take her to gunnery!
ОтветитьThe tankiest looking tank… ever!
ОтветитьGood show.
ОтветитьYou, sir, have ascended to my pantheon of military autists. You shall stand proud among staff at Bovington, the Chieftain, Greg's automobiles and airplanes, Drachinifel, navyreviewer and few others.
