Let me put it like this, as someone who actually liked SAO but still felt some level of disappointment with that show. Yes, part 2 of S1 was something, but how part 1 ended was the biggest middle finger to the fans, i actually expected them to have to reach Floor 100 before they could escape the death game. And after fumbling that they couldn't even give us a decent show about gamers playing games. To put it nice and simple, Shangri-La Frontier is what i wished SAO had become after the death game aka part 1 of S1 but instead it became a political murder mystery that at times made no sense.

oh I HIGHLY recommend going down the Fate rabbit hole, it's so messy in the best way.

When I first watched it, I liked SAO for the cool concepts and the animation, but the more I engaged with it the more the poor writing and execution upset me. I still like the setting though. Among my friends and family, we generally consider the abridged parody by SWE to be “actual” canon and the official release is just a fanfic by an extremely devoted and enthusiastic but somewhat unskilled writer. I understand that Reki Kawahara has a great deal of love and appreciation for his craft, but I don’t think he’s very good at it.

That said, one of my favorite stories period is a crossover fanfic between SAO and one other series. I won’t name it outright, but like SAO it had fascinating setting and character concepts that were wasted by a poor writer. With a competent author exploring them, the settings and characters from both source materials became downright inspired. Also, there’s a running gag that Kirito, having been transformed into his Alfheim player character (extremely physically able and capable of flight), can no longer tell the difference between doors and windows. Also he tries to get out of clothes shopping by claiming his shirt is blue, not black. Yui then informs him that while that is MATHEMATICALLY correct, it’s still indistinguishable to the human eye, so no, he can’t sit out the shopping trip.

Alicia no SAO is, was, and will always be shit if its done by it's original writer/creator. That worthless fuck couldn't be bothered to research ANYTHING! The "game" has so many design problems and bugs you'd think that EA directly coded it. There are no recurring characters other than the main asshole because that writer wanted a cheap power and sex fantasy. When anyone else tries to make something out of this drek it's instantly better because they do the research, put in the time to create characters not caricatures, and they have a good story to tell.

My two main issues with sao it's too many time skips and the writing for Asuna.

I agree that SAO gets too much hate, but it also gets too much praise from casuals as well. Every season has loads of problems (with the first being the least bad, but still), yet not to a level where I would say it feels like a waste of time watching. It's a solid mid show that appeals to people not wanting to think too deeply about it. Log Horizon would say is better written series, but is slower because it's more dialogue focused compared to other video game isekai shows.

I never even got to Alfheim and think SAO is really bad. The first 12 episodes were boring as shit. The only reason it´s not lumped together with shit like Isekai smartphone is that it has really good production quality. I mean... the story is so bad that they pull out a completely nonsense plot twist and just end the story line. Not that it got any better as far as I know.

I personally think everything was fine until alicization. Sure a couple plot holes here and there. But alicization and forward was just plot holes, political bull, and slight religious power ups. I mean seriously, angel Asuna with holy light and white wings vs bad guy that can power up by harnessing negative emotions through killing with a meat clever? Creating a digital world by kidnapping newborns and transferring their consciousness into said world to then breed inhabitants by speeding up time in said world by 300×? And supposedly transferring a brain dead Kirito into said world is supposed to heal him from a poison that was destroying his brain and consciousness? Yeah no. And to top it off is the bad guys in this one are the Americans. Yeah seriously, it's literally just a war between American soldiers mind controlling more American citizens into fighting the Japanese player base. And all because ONE of said soldiers is related to someone in laughing coffin. The cherry on top of this is somehow someway these digital world inhabitants gained sentience and sapience, and then decided to start picking sides in this war. Alicization and forward ruined sao.

I agree that SAO is overhated. Is it bad yes it is really bad but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable. Theres unwatchable bad. Then there’s bad in a fun way. I see SAO like that it has so many problems but it is also much fun.

Sao had a good first half of a season. and you should stop there nothing else was good. it was a great ending kirito getting up from bed malnourished and trying to find his waifu. thats where it should have ended but it got popular so the creator was like how can I unend this and continue on.
