My parents found an old (and not very) portable hard drive while clearing out the garage in our old home. On it was a pleasant surprise: a showreel with my VFX tests from 2001 and 2002. Really crazy to think that this was almost a decade ago! Talk about a blast from the past...

In 2001 "Billy3D" was an 11 year old getting bored of Macromedia Flash and cartooney stuff. He wanted to add realistic stuff to real footage like those shows he loved on Discovery - Mega Movie Magic and Splat. And one fine day he find a treasure trove of knowledge through the 128kbps ISDN connections on his home computer, called the AlamDV (later FXHome) forums.

A bunch of folks young and old, from across the globe, working together to make better VFX and tell better stories using consumer hardware. Sharing each others creations and rating the best work on a cinema construct 5 years pre-youtube. It was the good old days of prosumer film making where people were starting to push the lossy DV format to the limit and everyone was obsessed with emulating the 24p, organic "film look" :D

I saw such amazing work by such amazing people, so openly sharing how they did it, critiquing and advising, it inspired me to make my own stuff. Back with IRC and MSN was still in vogue.
It went beyond a text tutuorial, it was like learning from living people in Moscow and Minnesota, Bristol and Birmingham.

Probably sounds very normal in 2014, but for an 11 year old living in Punjab, India it was kinda like finding Hogwarts - a community of people making magic mega movie magic on their home computers.
