YOU’RE EATING YOUR CLOTHES
(or somebody else’s)

𝗛𝗼𝘄

Synthetic textiles used in a lot of our clothing contain micro fibers {a type of micro plastic}

These fibers get washed out of our clothing in the laundry process

They oftentimes pass right through wastewater filtration systems, into the sea

In the process, these plastics absorb chemicals, pollutants and carcinogens

Said pollutants are leached into the ocean, into the bloodstreams of aquatic life, or micro plastics are directly ingested by sea creatures

We eat seafood. We drink water. We eat salt. We drink beer. ⇜ All things that contain micro plastics and/or their pollutants.

Therefore, you’re eating your clothes. It affects us all. No matter what kind of diets we’re on, plastic finds a way into every single one!

*𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰 𝘧𝘶𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵: textiles are the largest source of primary micro plastics

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

☑ 𝗕𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿.

Take the extra step to understand what you’re buying and think of your clothing’s lifecycle — before, during, and after it is in your hands

☑ 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿.

Buying second hand clothing made with natural fibers is the most sustainable option. Go crazy at the thrift store!

Otherwise, if I’m buying new 𝘯𝘦𝘸, I’d go for some 100% recycled hemp, flax, jute, cotton, or wool to minimize contribution to the use of raw, virgin materials.

☑ 𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Businesses thrive on the satisfaction of their clients and customers. And if enough people express their concern about this area of production, making it a deal breaker in our purchase decisions, these companies will need to adapt!
