The Short Stirling was a British four-engine heavy bomber aircraft that was designed and built by Short Brothers during World War II. It was the first of the four-engined bombers to enter service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and played an important role in the early years of the war, although it was later surpassed by the more advanced Avro Lancaster.

The development of the Short Stirling began in the mid-1930s, when the Air Ministry issued a specification for a four-engine bomber with a range of 2,000 miles and a maximum bomb load of 4,000 pounds. Short Brothers, a company based in Belfast, Northern Ireland, responded with a design that featured a large, high-winged aircraft with a deep fuselage and a unique forward-bombing position that allowed the pilot to drop bombs directly over the target.

The prototype Stirling first flew in May 1939, and it was soon put into production. The Stirling was powered by four Bristol Hercules radial engines, which gave it a top speed of 260 mph and a range of 2,330 miles. It had a crew of seven, including a pilot, co-pilot, navigator, bomb-aimer, wireless operator, and two gunners.

The Stirling entered service with the RAF in early 1941, and it was immediately put to use in the bombing campaign against Germany. It was used to drop bombs on a wide range of targets, including industrial plants, military installations, and cities. It was also used to drop paratroopers and to tow gliders for airborne operations.

Despite its impressive capabilities, the Stirling suffered from a number of problems, including poor handling characteristics, a tendency to stall, and weak defensive armament. It was also vulnerable to enemy fighters, and it suffered heavy losses during the war. By the end of the war, the Stirling had been largely replaced by the more advanced Avro Lancaster, and it was retired from service in 1946.

In total, 2,371 Stirling bombers were produced, and they flew more than 18,000 missions during the war. Although it was not as successful as some of its contemporaries, the Stirling played an important role in the early years of the war and helped pave the way for the development of more advanced bombers in the years to come.
