1 question: does the editors keyboard act as a regular keyboard? Or does it ONLY work with resolve? (Edit: I think you answered that in the video. A: it DOES work as a standard keyboard, so I would not require an additional keyboard at all. Thank you!)
ОтветитьGreat video. Intro could be shorter.
ОтветитьNeither! They complement each other.
ОтветитьMy feeling is that the Speed Editor combined with a split ergonomic keyboard could be a suitable alternative in terms of portability and versatility.
Ответитьmy friend just bought the keyboard. its awesome. build quality is what you'd call pro. wish apple would take note. one question - is it possible to change the cheery reds for brown switches?
ОтветитьSuperb comparison! We were considering the speed editor but you've convinced us the Editor Keyboard is the way to go for faster Resolve editing. Thanks! Stoked to have found your channel. Instant sub! Follow up question: which computer mouse would recommend for pro video editors? 🐭
ОтветитьI just bought the keyboard and I don't have the studio activation key. Does the resolve key come inside of the keyboard box or the supplier must give it to me on a separate platform
ОтветитьHi thanks for the video. I have a mac book air will it power the keyboard?
Ответитьgonna rant here a little;
I feel like both the editor keyboard and speed editor are mostly gimmicks, not that well thought out, with the jogwheel as the only actual physical added value, and that there aren't any critical reviews out there.
For example, (this is specifically for the keyboard) if you look at the buttons above the jogwheel, the timeline and source button, the "q" shortcut to toggle is way faster and more ergonomic, as you can leave your hand on the wheel. Which makes these buttons kind of useless. If you want to move your playhead from edit point to edit point you have to reach for the arrows which are kind of far away (details, but important), which could be these 2 buttons on the top (and which also need to be closer, probably it's now there because of design/outlining). An inner/outer ring for jogging/scrolling would be way more comfortable, instead of reaching for the current 3 buttons all the time, from which the shuttle mode is just horrible to use. The other buttons on the left side could just as well be regular keys, which also didn't even work in the first place in the edit page, and we're talking about an "editor" keyboard here. That you can't zoom the timeline with a modifier key and the jogwheel is a big missed opportunity. And i can think of so many more. And that's about it about the additional value of such device.
The idea of having a specific device for editors has so much more potential. Just look at the fairlight desktop editor for fun. I feel like the editor keyboard is designed for the eye, maybe the budget, the marketing, and not for actual efficiency.
To end this short rant with something positive; i do love it that BMD offers specific hardware tools for editors. But there is a lot to improve.
Wish the editors keyboard would show more keyboard shortcuts.
ОтветитьThank so much for the comparisons! Wish the keys were silent and back-lit. Can't stand noisy typing or clicking :( Went for the Speed Editor. Would love a premium quiet keyboard for Premiere/Davinnci/etc
Ответитьthe main problem is that the Keyboard is massively overpriced, deducting the license price, the speed editor is essentially Free ($10-40) while the keyboard goes for 700, and that is a hefty price for a fancy Keyboard. the only thing i personally not like about the speed editor is the single use.
ОтветитьCannot find virtual controler on ipad.. need to create this.
ОтветитьBought a speed editor a year ago for $125 new in box from a post color house in Los Angeles. Just opened it a month ago as I am migrating from Pr Pro to Resolve editing platform and was excited to see how it may improve my workflow. After a month, I don’t see it speeding up my workflow. I continue using keyboard shortcuts, the speed editor sits on my desk and looks pretty neat. The wheel is cool, but keyboard short cuts get me up and down the timeline just fine. I was hoping the number keys on the speed editor worked like a video switcher by selecting a layer and can be used to cut in real time, but that’s not what they do
In all honesty, the long thick USB-C cable gets the most use charging my cellphone.
Im holding on to the speed editor incase it may be a good tool in the field as DIT paired with a color panel, but in the office it’s a tech looking paperweight
No backlite!!???
ОтветитьGod, thanks! I needed to know this. The Victorian shop was not very responsive. However, I will get down to buy mine. I will go with the keyboard combination. I will enjoy a chat with keen people.

PS, SUBSCRIBED.
Great video. What about backlit keyboards? Do they both offer, and look the same? Thanks new subscriber.
ОтветитьIf you need to select multiple clips in a timeline. How would you highlight the only the ones you want using the keyboard?
ОтветитьI've had the Editor's Keyboard for a while and would love it if you could use the shuttle/jog wheel to adjust the scale of and scroll the timeline. I've got my mouse scroll wheel programmed to scale the timeline with ALT/SCROLL and scroll the timeline with CTRL/SCROLL, but it would be soooo much better using the keyboard.
ОтветитьThe stupid thing with the Editor Keyboard is the shortcuts aren't indicated on the same buttons I use for years...
ОтветитьNow that DR is on Ipad , can the speed editor be used on this device via Bluetooth? its about the same size, for travel and on location edits is would be a winner.
ОтветитьThank you so much for making this video and helping me decide which is the best one to buy.
ОтветитьVery good story and production! Thank you!
ОтветитьWhat a great video. My problem is that I've been editing with premiere for about a decade, and now I'm making the switch to Resolve. I bought the speed editor, but after 3 weeks, although I like it, I feel like it slows me down a little. I'm not sure if it is the speed editor or just the fact that I'm still learning Resolve.
Ответитьgreat comparison
ОтветитьThank you for the great review 🙏💯
ОтветитьAre you reading from a teleprompter?
ОтветитьThanks. I bought the Speed Editor a few weeks back. Thought i was missing out on the keyboard but Editors keys make a Resolve keyboard which I think will work well with the Speed Editor.
ОтветитьFun Fact - the devices are meant for different roles/situations.
The speed editor is for quick edits on location, where as the full keyboard is for the edit suite.
I went for the speed editor as it is mobile together with a mobile keyboard/mouse .The full keyboard is better but I need it all to be mobile and compact.
ОтветитьYou make really fun videos to watch
ОтветитьI have them both but, editor keyboard not having a backlight kills this keyboard.
Ответитьbetter a macro pad 55 dollars from china 6 knobs 30 keys. and 3 layers bluethoot usb c or usb wirless
ОтветитьThanks for such a no-nonsense review of the two options. Much appreciated.
ОтветитьThank you for your review. I recently bought the speed editor but think I’ll get a keyboard one also to have at my desk. I can see using the speed with my MacBook Pro being my portable setup. It’s more expense than I would have liked, buying both but I can see the benefit of having both going forward. Thanks for your assistance with my thinking through the options.
Ответить2 years ago when i purchased Studio the speed Editor was FREE and the Editor key board was $595 Latterly a NO Brainer. Allays my Speed Editor is still NIB never opened it
ОтветитьOne thing I would add: as far as I know there is no windows-version for the Keyboard.
ОтветитьAre the key switches actually hot swappable or is it just the keycaps?
ОтветитьI just bought the editor keyboad and love it, I hope to get an answer to my question about the F/TC key. Everytine I press is to get to a certain location on a mediapool clip via timecode, the number field switches to frame count, in other words everytime I press the F/TC key it defaults to frame count. I have right clicked on the number field to change it back ti tC display, but it seems to switch back to frame count. How can that be fixed?
ОтветитьDo these also improve editing in Premiere Pro or is it only Resolve?
ОтветитьI was using the Speed Editor when I didn't have a dedicated editing workspace and liked it (until it stopped working and I have to send it in for repair) since I could just put it in my backpack (no way to do that with the keyboard). Now that I have my studio, I was debating whether or not to get the keyboard. This convinced me to go for it. Thanks!
ОтветитьIt would be nice if the editor keyboard was smaller but a big mechanical keyboard makes more sense considering longevity and ease of repair. Also manafacturing low volume mech keyboards must be cheaper and easier than a dome switch version.
ОтветитьI upgraded from the speed editor to the full editors keyboard and I really like it the only thing I miss from the speed editor is the audio level button. It was so handy to adjust levels with the dial, I wish there was a way to do this on the more expensive model.
Ответитьhow fast does a cfexpress type b card normally offload?
ОтветитьI have the editors keyboard and it's really great but it has one MAJOR setback that kills it for me: no backlit keys, which is a huge pain when editing or grading in a dimly lit environment as I most often do.
Ответитьcant use both, speed editor have no traditional keys and Editors keyboard is simply laptop layout instead normal keybaord layout.
ОтветитьJust bought the editor keyboard because of you and another creator! Thank you
ОтветитьLove your intro 🎉
ОтветитьHey dudes - Both the speed editor and the editors keyboards by Blackmagic Design are now super cheap for what they are. But when you remove the 200 USD price difference, which one should you buy? Well this video will answer that for you. But I am also interested if you already own a speed editor or a editors keyboard and what your favourite features are?
