Augusto Pinochet, a Chilean general, seized power in a military coup on September 11, 1973, ousting democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Pinochet's regime, which lasted until 1990, is notorious for brutal repression. His government detained, tortured, and executed thousands of political opponents. The regime’s secret police, the DINA, conducted widespread human rights abuses, including disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
While Pinochet implemented neoliberal economic reforms, which some credit with stabilizing Chile’s economy, the social cost was immense. The country suffered from increased inequality, poverty, and a dismantled welfare system. After stepping down, Pinochet retained military influence and faced international legal challenges for human rights violations, though he was never fully held accountable before his death in 2006.
His legacy remains controversial, with supporters lauding his economic policies and detractors condemning his violent dictatorship.
