Fake news has been a hot topic for i dunno, about two years now.
But a new analysis by FakeSpot for the Times suggests that fake reviews are what’s plaguing some of the internet’s top sites, including Trip advisor.
Using an algorithm to identify suspicious feedback and grading reviews based on suspected authenticity-
Fakespot’s analysis of tens of thousands of reviews estimates that as many as a third of trip advisor’s could be fake.
And an undercover investigation by the times revealed that businesses were willing to pay big bucks for those false testimonials.
The Times found internet sites selling 5 star reviews for as much as $50 a pop with others offering multiple review packages.
And one business owner even contacted the fake-fake review site set up by the times, writing:
“I’m looking to improve my TripAdvisor account, I’m currently 3.5 and would like to be 4.5 in the next month, please let me know if you can help."
But Trip Advisor rejects these findings saying: “The Times investigation is based on entirely flawed techniques.”
Going on to say that if they thought Fakespot’s methods worked, they would already be using them.
But since Americans spent over 100 billion dollars on travel last summer alone… user reviews are worth more than just a good reputation.
