Stupid apple cutting costs by using old chips to make the ultra and squeeze every penny out of these price points, makes absolutely no sense for them to have skipped M3 when they did, now they have these stupid naming conventions between the max and ultra. They probably didnt do a 4 ultra because it would make all their higher priced point machines absolutely pointless. I hate apple

What you’re showing is slightly off as you can’t fully fit deepseeks 671b parameter llm this graphic shows with quantization your would need 1.3 tb or vram to run it directly. but great video still pretty exciting

To put into perspective I had a M1 MBA with 8 GB and it could actually handle a lot. Mobile app development, Blender, UX design, raw photo editing and a lot of other creative tasks.

Sure it had some limits but it was insane what it could do.

I since upgraded to a M1 Pro MBP which has been amazing as well.

Well this M4 MBA is faster than my M1 Pro. It’s that good and now it comes with 16 GB which is what my M1 Pro has.

I actually miss the MBA at times because of its light weight, fanless design and thin profile in front of the keyboard. Ergonomically it’s the best laptop I have ever used. The comfort is next level.

I’m tempted to go back but I love the XDR screen on my 14” MBP.

M3 Ultra is not monolithic, it still uses UltraFusion, be prepared to be disappointed with its actual performance.

Oh man! This is so frustrating. Im a pro video editor. I own the m1 ultra and was waiting for the m4 ultra. Now I need to decide between more cores and a better single core performance this sucks! a very lame move by Apple. Instead of making a better Mac pro they just sell bad version of a Mac studio. Now I don't know what to do. I definitely not gonna buy the Mac Pro. Once again Apple is spitting on their base users just because they failed of creating a proper silicone Mac pro 😡

Okay so the M3 Ultra is not a single monolithic chip but rather two M3 Max chips fused together using Apple's UltraFusion technology. It's basically the same process as before so you will get performance loss.

A 5090 killer that has zero games to play? Apple REALLY needs to open up MacOS to allow for AAA gaming on Macs. Imagine the business they could make by pulling a Valve with the Steam Deck and creating their own console or handheld with an M4 Max or something.

My m2 15 inch macbook air has 24 gigs of ram and is the absolut best laptop I have ever owned. I can run 70B paramiter models with ease. The two TB of storage helps. I current have two different 70b models installed. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I can have MULTIPLE LLM's installed on a laptop. Prior to buying my macbook air I was researching the parts I would need to build a rack mounted machine for stuff like this. My macbook Air cost less than half of what that would have cost.

In my experience Q4 is not so good. I noticed huge improvement in reasoning when using Q8 and above (even with lower parameters)

Is it really true to say first time to get 512 GB in a machine? Haven't really high end engineering focused PC's had support for 512 GB for like at least a decade? Don't murder me, I'm typing this from a macbook and interested in purchasing one of these bad boys lol

Mac Mini M4, then the iPhone 16e and now the MacBook Air M4 - it almost feels like Apple are trying to reposition themselves in the value for money stakes! (so long as you don't want more RAM or storage...)

4 bit quantised AI model means the LLM will be not as good as full 671 billion non quantised version. I already have 128 gb m4 max macbook pro. No matter how much vram your mac has, still you won't able to use deepseek like models locally. Because beyond 32b LLM AI model running locally in computer, no matter the vram the system boast, gpu is not powerful as nvidia's cards. But still, finger crossed, innovation happening in AI is in unprecedented scale as we seen is any other fields of life. So it is a matter of time like few months, to make the LLM more efficient such that my m4 max macbook pro or m3 ultra Mac studio become very useful. But know this, now this local AI models are just usable like proof of concepts, but in future, it will become highly performant that we can stop claude or deepseek or chatgpt subscription completely. (By the way, if you are wondering, I am an AL ML student from IIT Roorke)

512 GB of RAM with 256 GB of the SSD storage😁If M3 Ultra is no longer made of 2 Max chips like M1 & M2 Ultra and instead from a single monolithic die, then it doesn't make sense for Apple to use previous M3 architecture rather than current M4 or the upcoming M5. Unless... Apple contracted TSMC before M4 to manufacture M3 Ultra chips or as u r suggesting it's trying to promote leaked M4/5 Ultra Mac Pro probably coming in the Q4 of this year. Still, it would be nice to compare it with Nvidia's Project Digits and other HW platforms aimed for the AI workloads. On the other hand M4 MB Air is another excellent while affordable product together with the popular M4 Mac Mini. Only if Apple would finally move from minimum 256 GB SSD storage to at least 512 GB without increasing price same as they did with the 8 GB of RAM free upgrade to 16 GB. Making SSD storage finally modular like in the M4 Mac Mini would be another great step forward, especially after making lots marketing claims of caring so much about environment/"mother" nature and for being sustainable and green!

Thought you were going to have more hands-on actual comparisons to a 5090 friend. Unfortunate. I've yet to find any tech-tuber push a LLM or 3D model so large that it miraculously performs on a Mac with that much unified RAM yet won't run on a 5090. Having that much RAM is indeed cool though, if you can afford the price!
