Greed and fame knows no boundaries, even the summit of Everest is no exempt from human greed and stupidity. Sad, very sad indeed.

I heard Messner talk about his ascent in a lecture series, London, c. 1980, an amazing lucid tale, about his early climbing years through to the Everest ascent, fascinating. (And then some craphead started asking him if he believed in God - huge groan from the audience - and he simply said 'No', politely but emphatically!)

Almost died from feaux mary jane. Seizure. In Coma 4 days. Told i was GREY when i arrived at OLOL. team of docs told gf "We need to know everything hes done. HIS LIFE DEPENDS on it." She told em. They saved me. Had she not called immediately as she did, had i not lived NEXT DOOR TO OLOL LIVINGSTON IN WALKER, HAD THEY NOT BEEN ABLE TO STABILIZE ME FOR THE RIDE TO the BR.. had they not gave a damn & teamed up to save me. I wouldnt be here. This was in 2014 march. For years i wondered Y. My life was meaningless, couldnt hold job anywhere. Plants r strict. U say the wrong thing they cut u. 2019 biggest opportunity came. I worked so hard for 2 years straight same place 40 hours sometimes more. Sometimes less. 6 days into my new CAREER JOB. I SCREWED IT UP. BROUGHT COUPLE SHELLS TO WORK TO SHOW COWORKER WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE CUZ THEY R JERRY MICHULEK COMP SHELLS. HE REPORTED ME. I LOST MY JOB. BUT ITS MY FAULT. JUST FELT ACCEPTED. NEVER HAD SO MANY PEOPLE SEEM GENUINELY HAPPY TO SEE ME & LEARN ABOUT ME. IT FELT GOOD. U KNOW. I HAD MY SON IN 2021 I MET HIM IN 2023. THESE 2 MEN.. IMPRESSIVE. NOT SURE WHY I TOLD ANYONE ABOUT THIS. What would be a good place to start a 1st either hike or hike summit for someone with 0 experience?! I have muscles but it means nothing. I think i could slim down to the body required to succeed or aim to at least. Lean.

The thing that puzzles me is when people pick on supplemental oxygen, specifically, as being too unnatural. Being up there at all is unnatural, and you rely on all sorts of artificial technology to achieve it. Why oxygen, specifically, is the thing that bothers them I will never really understand.

Buy a airplane and practice flying as high as you can without O2. You might not get to your destination but the purity of the experience justifies the risks.

Since the day I was born I've been addicted to oxygen. And as an adult I trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu And anytime I get caught in a chokehold and I can't breathe oxygen, I tapout . So to climb Mount Everest without oxygen, is quite the achievement.

It’s addiction people kill themselves getting high. They orphan their children to feed their fragile egos and their addictions whatever they may be. Parents go climbing together Everest K2 and die, leaving their children without parents. What kind of nonsense is that? That’s just plain selfish egotistical narcissistic behavior. One woman was pregnant climbing without O2.?what about the baby? It’s so important for her to be first she ended up losing her life over it . I’m not judging anyone. I had a problem with addiction when I was a young parent and a few times I did the same thing I chose the drug so I know how it feels. Fortunately, I’ve been clean!a long time, but I see no difference with this behavior and addiction.

It’s likely that they have special medical conditions that allow them to do that, like Claudia Pechstein the ice skater, whose blood can hold a higher concentration of oxygen than regular people so much so that she didn’t pass doping tests and had to prove that it’s her natural make up not doping.
Also, the way they are describing it, they were lucky that the effects of the lack of oxygen were mostly positive emotional and lucky the conditions didn’t make things more complicated.

An episode describing the death of Gunther Messner on Nanga Parbat might be interesting. The controversy that followed; was Gunther swept down the Diamir Face by an avalanche or did Reinhold desert an ailing Gunther out of blind ambition? The recent sequential discoveries of Gunther’s boots on the Diamir Face and subsequent DNA confirmation pretty much put the controversy to bed.

I know I’m late to the party, but for the talking head pieces, maybe try to find the best focus and then lock it in.

With more people watching on tv and it just phone and computer, the constant in and out is a bit much (that’s what she said).

Great Videos, as always, but you missed a little fact: Around the Hillary Step, Habeler drew an arrow in the snow, pointing downwards. Habeler wanted to give up! And immediately, Messner drew an arrow pointing towards the summit besides Habelers. And they continued upwards. That little detail describes the driving force of Messner, their non-verbal-communication and that Habeler subordinated himself under the force of Messner.
But anyway: Great great video!!!

Messner is at best a sociopath. He has tried to destroy several fellow mountaineers reputation out of spite. The way he behaved towards Habeler was despicable but best example is his Antarctica tour with Arved Fuchs . Messner started talking shit even during the expedition about Fuchs via Radio to take all the glory. Messner is a sociopath who always used people and them discarded them often attacking him. A pathological liar.
