Thank you for sharing! I really enjoy the Ask Anything format!
ОтветитьI know Latosa escrima was part of the curriculum years ago. What do teach to round off weapons training with WT? Besides the two weapon forms. Thanks .
ОтветитьSifu Alex, what are your thoughts on the history of Wing Chun and how todays Wing Chun might be a shortened version of a much broader curriculum, thanks 🙏
ОтветитьHello Mr. Richter,
My name is Jorge Estevez, I apologize once again for having emailed you at your private email! I had no idea. I wanted to ask you a question regarding WT footwork. I will be in New York, next week and would love to visit your school.
Hey what's up ! do you have any stories about the infamous fight between William Cheung & Emin Boztepe ? Thanks for your work ! (Daniel Barrier from Marseilles,France)
ОтветитьWhat do you feel (in your opinion) is the least important thing / aspect to train on in WC that other people may overly train or focus on. Big fan. Wishing you continued success in everything you do.
ОтветитьGreat stuff once again!
ОтветитьDo you have any Ti Lung stories?
ОтветитьHow Long dös it take für you Tod learn the bat Cham São?
ОтветитьEntertaining and informative episode again. Thank you for answering my question. I knew it is a tough question. I had to formulate it carefully to put it in the right context.
I like how you say that you don't know how to answer it and than continues giving your insights and telling more background stories about filming of Big Boss👍😀
What percentage of students in your area get into and maintain athletic conditioning versus those who don't? Here in po' dunk Arkansas, not many. Like you said before, they all just want the secret techniques of ultimate power.
ОтветитьThank you for the comments on the gimmick training tools. In Choy Lay Fut there is always talk of 18 types of dummies that were originally used, when the reality is its next to impossible to find the main ching jong dummy or for some the dedicated space to use it. I would also add exotic forms to that list. People collect tons of forms in Choy Lay Fut when in fact they are mostly redundant or gimmicks and you would be more than ok with 3 or 4
ОтветитьGreat episode! Thanks for the entertainment, Alex I always look forward to these podcasts. 👍
Quick question! Seeing as how you much prefer watching Strength+Conditioning content over WT content, how has your own Strength training affected your WT training? I know there's the myth that "Bruce Lee's biceps would actually slow him down" in a fight. What's your personal view?
Hope you're recovering well from the shoulder surgery! 💪
Hello sifu Alex thank you again for answering my question from the first AMA but now my question would be if you were to create a combat sport designed for wing chun and other similar kung fu systems how would you go about it
ОтветитьGreat episode Sifu Alex (thanks for pointing out the right way of address). Awesome how you talked about Hong Kong. I'd like to visit Bey Logan's office. Yeah, there are tons of malls, but Mong Kok has great food and night markets. Never knew The One had so much history. Also, this segment was great since Dre got to join in! Also, liked your explanation of the term "dojo" and the different forms of etiquette and mentalities in Japanese and Chinese training halls. As an aside, "do" is similar in Japanese and Cantonese because Cantonese had a big influence on the Japanese language. Cantonese is much closer to the pronunciation of "authentic" Chinese than Mandarin.
As for training tools, I'm divided on the iron rings. My sifu had me use them after just a few months of training. My training could have been better if I got down the fundamental techniques first. BUT, wow, they made my movements quicker. I don't think I could have practiced my hand shapes by holding dumbells while doing the techniques. Still, fundamentals with basic equipment first is the better option.
Finally, my question is actually the question that went unanswered, the one about using your Wing Tsun outside of a training hall setting. Have you ever had to do this? Or if you'd like, who do you think would win in a one-on-one, no prep time fight: Captain America or Batman?
Again, thank you. Hope all is well!
The very thought of numerous 'WT' schools that rebranded themselves (Wing Tjun, Wing Tsjun, Wing Tszun, Wing Tsjzun, Wing Tszoon, etc.), in fear of getting sued for potential copyright infringement... only to then find out that 'WT' was never actually trademarked – had me spit out my Bruce Tea™ in fits of laughter!
ОтветитьAnother fine podcast Mr KFG..
Ps hope the surgery heals quickly.
Would be great to hear any stories about Emin Boztepe. I wonder what you think of him in terms of his skill.
ОтветитьThanks Alex and great Q and A! Good point about the ring, especially about the outward pressure. Sometimes I think Kung Fu guys had the original model for marketing martial arts- wuxia novels, street performances, strange exercise equipment, Dit Da Jow, Kwan Tak Hing movies... Hopefully it’ll be possible to go back to Hong Kong soon
ОтветитьI love AMAs episodes! I have a question for a future episode: What mistake have you made in teaching Wing Chun, that you’d say, that you have learned from the most?
ОтветитьHi Si-Gung;
Sorry to hear about your shoulder injury! I myself have dealt with rotator cuff tendonosis/impingement and had to learn to retract my shoulders during chi sao (the bong sao especially aggravated my shoulder pain for a bit)
What would you say are the most common injuries during martial arts training and how would you advise preventing them?
Hi Sifu Alex. An idea for the next "Ask Me Anything", a question more about your way of thinking in life and business.... For example, you spoke a couple of times briefly about not letting "people live rent-free in your head". Perhaps you can speak on this and other similar points in greater detail - about how you handled various situations.
ОтветитьAmazing episode Sifu! Here’s my question. How important to keep your anger/pride/EGO check when it comes to self-defense? I asked because I’m today society you see on the news people shooting at others on the highway etc.
ОтветитьWhat do you think is the origin of the Wing Tsun system? I heard a theory that the WT came from a system of double knives like the Baat Jam Dao
ОтветитьYou can look for Wing Tsun and EOWT logo in Europe and you will see that it is trademarked by KK, so no problem in US. But someone think that KK is going to do something if someone out of his organisation is using it?
ОтветитьAnother possible "Ask Me Anything" idea .... Grappling as present in Wing Chun. Many demoes in WT end with a throw or incorporate various locks. WT seems to be the only branch (or at least one of the very few) to speak about anti-grappling (regardless of how effective it is without actual knowledge of bjj). Other instructors of different lineages (without getting into specific names or lineages) have specifically stated that WC is a striking and not a throwing/locking style. So... is the grappling component something that Sifu Leung Ting specifically emphasized to make things more practical, or was it taught generally by Yip Man as well and just not at emphasized by some of his other students.
ОтветитьI have a question for the next time: When to call a Chinese martial arts film a Wuxia movie and when to call it a Kung fu movie. What are your opinions about it?
ОтветитьI greatly look forward to your possible Leung Ting episode.
ОтветитьNice episode! My question is:
How should the presumption of unpredictability in self-defense play a role in the fighting strategy (and training) for realistic scenarios if compared to the BS "one on one empty parking lot situation"?
And considering this, is "this dude would totally gouge GSP eyes" the new "Tito Ortiz would totally choke this dude out"? 😀
Dear Sifu Alex, always enjoying your videos and content. Question: How is the Siu Lin Dai Da concept being taught in the LT Wing Tsun and is it a focus topic in HK? Appreciated and looking forward to the next episode ☺️
ОтветитьI learned JKD from David Drew Howe and his method was very informative and organized. Even though we did rotating drills between wing chun, kali, savage, and boxing he always showed the common thread between the arts, especially between some of the wing chun/kali striking/ trapping techniques. And gotta admit, when I first met him, coz Drew is this short chubby dude back in 93, so I thought he wasn't that good. In fact, I had a classmate who was a wushu practitioner that I thought was better coz he was doing crazy splits on the 1st day. But when one of the tall students asked if he could kick him in the head, he didn't even jump, he kicked his leg straight up to the dude's face.
ОтветитьHello sifu Richter, when I practice siu nim tao for a long time at slow speed I always feel a lot of tension in my knees, I thought it was normal at the beginning but even a year later it was still an issue. I am not sure if it's strengthening my knees or damaging them. Do you have any recommendations that could help ? Thank you
ОтветитьAwesome!
ОтветитьQ+A Is it safe to say Vasyl Lomachenko and Manny Pacquiao employ and execute more WT techniques in their fights than Anderson Silva and Tony Ferguson? e.g Lomachenko attacks boxers to the blind side, Manny throws a verticle fist jab with all his wingspan. Why does A.Silva get noted for WT techniques just because he frails his arms around, does this make it WT?? Manny has attributed Bruce Lee for his interest in boxing.
ОтветитьThat was an excellent question and answer.
I did have one question When he came to this country. At approximately 18, he had maybe five to three years of Wing Chun experience under his belt.
For other practitioners. Gary Lam . Barry Lee, others of the same vintage, all who had much more time in grade, I've never heard of anyone being as skilled as Bruce Lee. How is it possible that someone with only two or three years of actual training when he arrived on these shores be so damn good? As Jesse Glover calls it almost unbelievable that the kind of skill he exhibited is evidenced by the writings of Jesse Glover.
But at that time he had only three maybe five years of training, please explain that to me.
Keep these coming. All are very good and interesting.
Ответитьdont ever chestion my cherman or chinglish
ОтветитьCool Ron Van Clief story...OSS!
ОтветитьMy first trip to HK, met Bey Logan who was training near the Star Ferry. He was very nice, introduced his Si-Fu, gave me his card and we took a pic together. Sadly time was against us and I was with family who needed to get going, but it was one of those highlight moments in my life. Respect
