Fun Fact an estimated 14,000 Mexicans ( mostly Tejanos ) fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. One famous unit was the 33rd Texas Calvary lead by Col Santos Bienavides. A judge who collected bounties for fugitive slaves

My family's have been in northern New Mexico since the 1500,s . My mother's side. is part from Spain and my father's is from New Mexico mixed with Indian from the 1800 . As they married into the different races. I go to my the land of my forefathers in the coyote areas and see the lands they cultivate and the land the government has taken away from my family. They came from another continent and took r land. I live near to the Santa Cruz church thats 1600,s 400 years old. My grandma is buried there.😢

My latino half came Coahuila, I wish the US took all of Arido America, so all the Mexican problems like cartels, manufactoring, and immigration would be consistent, as things like Nafta and narcotics have destroyed the prosperity and dignity of the Northern Mexican States, in my opinion.

Also the south bank of the Rio Grande and Yucatan are made of different poeples than Mexica.

Amerindian tribes is a way to strip them of their Native American title. We know this isn't India dude. Indians are beautiful people but don't strip Native Americans of their OG title. It's like how you created a new yellow corn like 50 years ago and called that corn and original corn you call it Mexican corn. Best suttle re-branders in history.

I'm a Mexican from the North near the border and so my parents families. Both my mom and dad became orphans at an early age so I did not have the chance to meet most of my relatives but the older ones I did met were from both sides (mom and dad's) really white blue eyed people and others with a very dark skin and native features. I was a kid and never asked questions about our heritage because I didnt care. But now as an adult I would like to know why is it that here in the north of Mexico there is very common to see white looking people. From where our families came to settle here and mix all together? It would be nice to know more of my great grandparents. I would have love to talk with my grandparents and hear their stories

Spain and Mexico could never defeat the Comanche. The Appache ended asking Spain for protection from them. It took the US a long time to defeat them. Once they got the horse, they were the dominate power in Northern Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma. A huge territory.

God bless those Spaniards who came to the American Southwest. And God bless those those early American Natives who saw their land overtaken by the Spaniards. But in the end, as we look back, the majority of us come from a mix of both Spanish and Native American. WHy was it tht in Mexico people did intermarry with different races? WHitew with Indians.... balcks.... ect... until we are all just Meztisos? WHy was it so different in the USA? THere was a level of mixing between Spaniards and Natives in California and Texas and New Mexico.... but I thin it has to do with th fact that the men who came to Mexico from Spain came specifically to find wives, make families, and settle down.

You brought up a lot of good points that I’ve been thinking about for a while. Watching this video just confirmed I wasn’t so crazy for thinking it. But the Mexican and other Hispanic immigrants really do kind of wash out the Hispano community in a way. I know it’s no way intentional and I don’t say this to villainize them because it’s in no way their fault. But when you have a lot of Tejanos, Coloradan Hispanos, Californios, etc identifying as “Mexican”, and then on the opposite there are, for example, Mexican Americans identifying themselves as “Tejano” because they use it as synonymous with “Texans of Mexican descent”, it just kind of absorbs Hispanos into the general Mexican and Hispanic population, diluting Hispano identities.

It’s also the fact that after annexation, Anglos kept labeling Hispanos as “Mexican” and I guess this might’ve encouraged some Hispanos to self identify as Mexican.

There is also a good amount of Hispanos who are unaware of their own history and because they’re unaware, identifying as “Mexican” just makes the most sense to them because they see similarities between Mexican American culture and Hispano culture such as speaking Spanish, eating some similar foods, in the process making the connection that both are essentially the same.

It’s a whole combination of different situations. And I personally believe it’s harmful to the Hispano cultures in terms of maintaining a firm identity, strong culture, and acknowledgment of us as a people from those outside of our community. It’s also resulted in some Mexican Americans with no real ancestral ties to the land, to start spreading ideologies about how this land is still Mexico and how that somehow equals the border crossed all Mexicans and Mexicans didn’t cross it. Well I’m assuming they’re Mexican American and not Hispano because of the way some have went about arguing about it. “We didn’t cross the border, it crossed us” is originally an Hispano protest. And Mexican Americans using this for themselves makes people not take Hispanos seriously and makes people believe Hispanos don’t exist and like we’re all just bsing when we say that. It just drowns out our voices, it drowns out our existence, it diminishes our culture and identity.

And to be clear, I do acknowledge that Hispano culture is a mix of Mexican, Native American, and Spanish and other European influences as well as African. Mexican and Spanish is part of the mix of influences, but we’re not Mexican, we’re not Spanish, we are our own identity and it’s time that we start strengthening our unique identities. Overtime, our identity and culture has evolved into something completely different and separate from the period of belonging to Spain or Mexico.
