Philippe Callens also wrote a dance to this tune, Moniek’s Maggot (1990), published in Purcell’s Dancing Master, by Nicolas Broadbridge & Marjorie K. Fennessy, 1997.

When I first heard this beautiful, stately tune, "A Postcard to Henry Purcell" on the soundtrack for the movie "Pride & Prejudice, I imagined doing an elegant English country dance to it.

(It was only much later I discovered that Philippe Callens had already written a dance to this tune, Moniek’s Maggot (1990), published in Purcell’s Dancing Master, by Nicolas Broadbridge & Marjorie K. Fennessy, 1997.)

I asked caller William Brearley to try writing a dance to the tune and musician Jean Monroe to do an arrangement suitable for an English country dance. Fortunately, they both agreed, worked on it together and did a superb job.

I'm also very grateful to the dancers who worked hard on getting the timing right and danced with precision and flair.

Dancers: William Brearley, Katie Sanger, Steve & Jeannette Sargent, Paul and Marcelle Lipke

Lex Hamilton, my audio engineer/consultant, removed the 'boomy' bass sound from the original recording.

Re: the coda

If a venue has a problem accommodating 6 dancers abreast in the coda, William is OK with your adapting the coda to fit the space.

Paul Lipke offered some potential coda alternatives:

There are various ways everyone could cast or cloverleaf after the left hand ½ way turn, and end up with the 1s facing up, and the 2s and 3s below them in a line of four, also facing up for the step right and honor.
