Mt. LeConte, is arguably the crown jewel of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The mountain top is home of LeConte Lodge, a rustic collection of cabins on the mountain, where visitors stay to experience life as it was before many modern conveniences, like electricity and indoor plumbing. The Alum Cave Trail, is one of 5 major trails to reach the summit. The other 4 are Trillium Gap Trail, Rainbow Falls Trail, The Boulevard Trail, and Bullhead. Some also consider Bushy Mountain as the 6th trail to LeConte, but The Bushy Mountain Trail connects to the Trillium Gap trail a few miles before Trillium reaches LeConte. Regardless of the trail you take to the summit, plan on spending a couple hours or more on the mountain to take in the majestic views from Myrtle Point and Cliff Tops. Also stop into the Gift Shop at the Lodge and secure your T-Shirt. You can only purchase these coveted "I hiked It" shirts at the Lodge.
The Alum Cave Trail is great trail to hike, even if tackling the summit of LeConte is not in your plans. Most who hike this trail do not end up on the summit of the mountain. There are four main attractions to see from the trail head to Alum Cave Bluff, these are Arch Rock, Inspiration Point, the Eye of the needed and finally the namesake attraction Alum Cave Bluff.
Alum Cave is not a cave by conventional thinking. It is a roughly an 80 foot tall rock overhang on the side of the mountain. There are over 150 stairs leading directly to the Bluff and once you are there the terrain at the bluff is very steep and the sandy dirt is loose so be careful with your footing. If you plan on continuing to the summit of LeConte, then be prepared, as the trail gets steeper, more rugged, narrow and rocky along the way.
