Editing on the "Cheapest" Mac Studio, Shocking Results!

exfat is fine for the mac your problem is you have to use a fast thunderbolt drive for external enditing everyone knows this that understands ssd drives type c and usb a drives are usless for speed no matter what they are rated at i have a and NVME 3300 read and 3000 write drive in my dock and its runs close to these speeds when hooked direct to my pc mother board but to my mac in the dock on the type C buss iam lucky to see hi 700 r/w speeds which is way to slow for external video editing , fyi there are at lest 4 diffeerent speed types of external thiundbolt drives/ cases the fastest case is also powered due to the nvme drives being used in them use up wards to 4 amps of juice to right properly with out also burningup the drive so be carfull when selecting external thunderbolt drives..

I have more or less the same TR PC as you except still using a AORUS Water-cooled 1080Ti 11GB. One of the things that always gets me is... when we render in Resolve Studio, there are the options to render with the GPU (Nvidia) or CPU (Native). I always find that with large complex renders, the GPU is always much faster! When I look at the amount of load on the renders, the LOAD is always 85-100% on either one I choose while the other sits almost idle. I do NOT understand why Black Magic cannot allow "Renders" to be used by both... CPU & GPU at the same time? Thus, in common thought would "totally improve render speed and performance" by a significant percentage, and possibly in everything else within Resolve.

Your title lead me to think that you were going to build a PC to comparable performance of Mac Studio but CHEAPER.

A $6k PC? That's worth more than both my cars combined! That's over 20% the value of my HOUSE!

I'm new to editing and have a question. Why do people edit with the preview set to full? The box you're watching to footage in is pretty small. If your project is at 4k, wouldn't viewing it and 1/4 res still give you 1080p in that little window?

Resolve sounds way more flaky than than I've heard of before. On the external SSD, be aware the front ports on the low-end Studio are only USB4 not TB4.

ExFAT is a terrible format for editing AND at some point editing of a non heat dissipated drive like that is gonna burn you because those are actually designed for file storage, not all day edits.

OK Apple released a video codec update today to improve a large number of codecs on the Mac Studio today. Might be FCP related it would be interesting to see if DR has a boost.

Some people are so fucking stupid, they know what kind of company Apple is with their slowing down phones with firmware and the like but they still buy their products. That's why they do it cause they know the fanboys are too thick to use androids and Windows. You yourself own a decent pc why would you purchase any Apple product.

Great video. All said and done, would you change anything as far as the GPU and RAM upgrade goes? I’m trying to decide to run with a base model M1 MAX or change up either the GPU or RAM.

A brilliant test. Very hands on, practical, and similar to workflows and projects styles I often edit in Premiere. One of the best 'test drive' edit comparison vids I've seen. Thanks for taking the time and trying to really drill down how these systems actually work. You helped me make several decisions (going w Mac Studio for main edit setup) and opening my eyes a little more to how awesome Resolve is as well. Keep making great vids!

I've got the M1 Max Mac Studio w/ 1tb SSD, my only upgrade. I do drum videos for YT, nothing fancy, 3 GoPros (Hero 7). The only challenge I've run into is that when I drop the 3 cameras into Multicam it gets choppy. I've tried different settings to correct but am now wondering if I should copy all the files to the Mac SSD and run them that way. I use an ATEM Mini Pro ISO that records all the cameras onto my Sandisk 500gb SSD (up to 1050) which is EXFat and plugged into a hub, then plugged into one of the back 4 slots. I save everything to a T7 afterwards. Do you think the hub connection would be causing the choppiness? It only happens in multicam. If I play the file without it on, very smooth. Thanx!

A 'few years' is a generation in computing so it's unfair to compare your PC with a brand new Mac Studio!

Mixing Prores (optimised for Mac) and Braw (very lightweight) isn’t a great test. What would be interesting would be seeing some more manufacturer-specific codecs like MXF, H.265 etc mixed in with intermediate codecs like Prores.

If it means I can DIY service and repairs, I'll rather wait a few minutes longer on my PC. 😉

I have a question, why don't you have a 3090 or 3080ti? Were they not available? I think one of those GPUs will solve your bottleneck problem. As a matter of fact, I'm willing to bet those newer GPUs will beat the Mac. That's really a head to head I would rather see since that's who Apple says they are faster than in their vague unexplainable graphs they show. 😆

Does the Mac have to scale to due to the monitor not being apple? I hear this can really impact performance if the Mac has to do this day 60 times a second for a 60hhz monitor. Has anyone tested performance with a non apple and an apple display? Does anyone know more about this? It seems those that produce vids praising the studio all seem to use Mac display.

When we talk about playback of 8k red r3d its important to know if you playback full debayer 16 bit or just half res. I believe, it cant even remotely play it back in a 4k timeline, but maby in a 1080 timeline.

Hi I have LG 27 inch monitor which is 1080p resolution comes with HDMI. Does Mac Studio work on HDMI monitor if so, does the performance vary with hdmi monitors?

did you do a render in place before the final render? but that is in the 18.1 where i found it and may not be in the 17xx whatever. then, with the newest iphone 14 4k 60fps which i suppose you have in your camera phone pocket, (or will have) do you get good results for a daily driver at least in b-roll? asking more than suggesting. i've only been editing 5 years seriously and playing since sony movie studio 9 in 2009 and am not accomplished by anyone's stretch of imagination to include my own. david here.

You should never edit from USB drives... The Best investment for a video editor is a fast DAS or NAS to edit from otherwise it doesnt matter if the machine you're using has 32 or 4 cores.
The H264 export Will always be faster on an M1 or Intel PC than on AMD because the first two have hardware encoders in the silicón and Amd has to render in software mode, so if your Main Workflow is exporting to H264/x265 it's better (and cheaper) to spend your cash on an i7 than on a Threadripper.

I think that the M1 puts much more strain on the processor when working with PP. If the m1 were loaded for a long time as a PC workstation, it would become a heating element that would eventually end up in the service center with a very expensive bill. Not to mention how much does it cost to simple upgrade Mac and Pc

So base M1 Studio is a bit faster then 5yo Nvidia GPU (it was ~4yo when the video been released)? That's what I've expected.
I wonder how M2 Max compares to RTX 4090.

My workflow is much simpler than yours so this Studio Max is plenty for me. Just got one from Costco for $1499. My first Mac.

Now this is a review that’s really helping me out deciding whether I upgrade my windows PC or spend that money on a Studio.

I’m slowly working on 8K videos as well and something I can almost never find is a comparison on Warp Stabilizer (which I use on EVERY clip). Looks like the Mac is solid enough for it.

If you do read this, is it possible to compare warp times on both the windows and the studio?

I don’t get it . If you have 8k footage .. what’s it mean to edit in a 4k time line ? Why not just edit 8k in a 8k time line ? What’s difference in a 8k timeline and a 4k time line when it’s 8k footage ?
