This is Pippa. Pippa was a three year old female Dumbo rat. She had what we thought was just a very bad case of myco that she had picked up a couple of months ago with her 3 cage mates. Remy (a three and a half year old male Dumbo), and Rocket and Dodger (2 year old male fancy rats) Everyone but Pippa recovered. This video was taken recently on a Saturday. She was stumbling around a little bit, really not eating and drinking, but we thought she just wasn't feeling well and didn't want to. You can see by the porphoryn around her eyes and nose that she wasn't feeling well, and in her manner generally. On Saturday Pippa was no worse, but Remy woke up not doing well at all. He had several mild seizures through the day and one large one that we think was probably a stroke. My mother sat up was Remy all night, holding him. The next day we took him to the vet to have him euthanized. That was a horrible day. The day after we lost Remy, Peppa stumbled off the edge of the bed and we realize that she could barely see at all. We think her sense of smell was going because she couldn't seem to find food even if you put it under her face. I believe now that she had lost her sense of smell by Wednesday. She was stumbling and shambling around the cage. She would take a few steps and rest her head, and then lie still for hours resting. We never saw her drink the last few days, so we were giving her baby food-peas-because it has a lot of water in it, and she was taking only a small bite of two. That night, I tried to give her one of her favorite treats, mini chocolate chips. Even when I put them directly in her mouth, she was unable to eat more than two of the five I tried. I think she may not have been able to swallow. Thursday, we took Pippa to the vet to be euthanize. I was afraid it might be a pituitary tumor but the doctor said it was a very strong possibility that the Myco had crossed the meninges and become a neurological condition, and that we were making the right decision. And so we lost two of our babies in the same week 4 days apart. Watch how Pippa tries to eat the peanut butter chip in this video, and if you have a rat that's doing this try to get help for it immediately. I'm NOT a vet, so don't do it because I said you should. Do it because, as with all things rat, it could be nothing, or it could be the end. Pippa's sudden onset of bizarre symptoms only lasted for a little over two days, but that was way too long. I wish we had taken her to the vet with Remy. We love our babies, and it's been major struggle to decide whether or not to post this video. We feel that if it can help anyone at all then it is worth it. We miss our Pippa the (Once aka the Pip Squeak, then The Pippapotomus, and then Dad's little Hostess Snowball Twin Pack)so, so very much, as we always do. If you leave comments, which are welcome please be kind. Once we realized how severe she was we dealt with it as quickly as we could. And in spite of our research, vet visits, and personal experiences, we are learning everyday, and maybe you know something we don't. The vet is great. She attends more and more classes on small animals now, and has put a lot of work into our babies sometimes learning side by side us as she goes.
