Another great, to the point, video. My wife and I returned to live in the metro Phoenix, AZ area after a three years being away. Trying to find an affordable home in a good location in a quality neighborhood without an HOA is impossible. We bought new construction as we are retired. The builder offered attractive terms. I am not thrilled being in an HOA but do feel in our position we had no other reasonable choice. Starter homes and modest affordable retirement homes all involve an HOA.

If you don't pay your property taxes, the government can put a lien on your home as well. Two fold control. I just about bought a condo in Sun Village, Surprise AZ. They weren't going to give me a copy of the cc&rs before closing unless I paid $100 for a rush. I agreed and they sent them to me by e-mail. 700+ pages. 😮. A couple of days before closing. The inspection of the place turned up issues that were not acceptable to me so I cancelled the contract according to contract specifications, so the deal fell through. It is very hard to find a place without an HOA.

Sued my AZ HOA in court 2x... Won both times... Recovered all my legal fees plus damages... They don't even talk or wave to me anymore..

Even if you find an ok HOA, there is no guarantee it will stay that way. HOAs are for two kinds of people, those that want to take advantage of people and those that are ok with that.

Really wonder how much they add to the overall cost of home ownership. At least some of those houses should also logically achieve the same values regardless of the HOA existing.

It is not just h o a boards. There are entire cities that were incorporated as master planned communities. One of the most famous is irvine california. It was created out of part of irvine ranch. Everything within that city is part of the HO. A. So there is no way to avoid joining an association if you want to live in that city.

HOA has been going insane in my neighborhood. We don't have any pool, gardens, or fences, yet our HOA fee is $750 per year not including tax and online service fee.

HOA boards are FULL of Nosey Roey Narscissts! Controlling, dictating and fining. And when your back is turned they're talking about you!

This will be my challenge after retirement when I relocate to another state. I refuse to live anywhere near an HOA. No one will tell me that my grass is 2 inches too tall or what color to paint my house or their other stupid rules.

Isn't there away from the power hungry people.... can't the people voted out HOA's taking over everyones home. They need to bring back what they have a say so without stronghold power. The HOA my house was part of was legally wound up a few years ago. Now we are not part of any HOA.

I live in an HOA now. They’re pretty chill. I’ve seen a corrupt one though but doesn’t seem to be a huge problem in my region. Just read the rules & regs/condo declaration beforehand so you know what you’re getting into.

I've stopped having any empathy or sympathy for whatever happens to anyone that is STUPID enough to buy a house in any HOA development. They deserve whatever they get. After all, it's right there in the fine print...

I guess ignorance really is bliss for some people. As far as I'm concerned, they can enjoy it all they want. I just don't want to hear any of their blues after being foolish enough to build or buy where they did. They made a choice. Bad decisions have consequences.

My HOA IN Teays Valley WV is a nightmare! We follow the rules but others are exempt especially Country Club members. Fees are too high. We have been constantly stocked because others want our property.

Thank god I love in Brazil, here the homeowner rules are:

I would also add that at the turn of the century, major gas companies like Esso (Standard Oil) went around the country buying big land tracts so they could put a gas station near Road Interstates. They also built developments.
