Liming a lake is essential work for the health of carp

Annual treatment with agricultural grade lime has been a vital part of our winter maintenance program for the last 10 years. It kills parasites that live in the silt that can affect the health of the fish. It also helps to accelerate the breakdown of organic matter and silt that we can’t remove mechanically. Lime also raises the calcium level of the water and calcium is a fundamental building block for many invertebrates and freshwater mussels. Without enough calcium, they can’t build their shells. Freshwater mussels help filter our water so by helping them, they are helping us. Before we began treating with lime we didn't have any living freshwater mussels, only the empty shells of a population lost to time and neglect but now, we have a thriving population.
