Hey Joe From Trinidad enjoy your videos. so i am changing out my router and the new one does not allow me to use the same ssid from my old network so is there an easy way to get the new wifi to the apps like Tuya ,Geeni, ewelink, Govee etc that i use in my smart home ???

I think it remains true that triband Wifi 6 is actually more useful for most people than triband 6e. Having a secondary 5ghz signal provides a lot more utility than a 6ghz signal. And i say that as someone that is currently on a triband 6e setup.

My 6 year old Eero WiFi 5 mesh system (3 pack) is failing and needs an upgrade. My ISP provides 2gb down. So you are recommending even though I have no devices that currently support WiFi 7, I spend the extra $150 (assuming it is not a budget issue) and buy a WiFi 7 system over a 6e?

Anybody else complaining about Amazon Alexa devices LOSING connectivity and ceasing to function controlling Wiz devices lately? My bulbs, plugs, motion detectors, and switches are all totally hit and miss the last 6 months. For example, when I use Alexa to turn on my living room lights, only half of them respond. Sometimes they respond late, sometimes not at all. It always works when I use the Wiz app though, so the problem seems to be with Amazon. Thanks, Tony.

Fabulous - very informative and well explained - thank you! I sadly have a terrible broadband connection limited to just 30Mbps (I dream of one day having full fibre). I recently switched ISP and suddenly my home network keeps grinding to a halt. This is because, like you, I have a lot of devices and therefore a lot of internal traffic (IP security cameras, Sonos, Tapo sockets, Sky TV (a UK thing but uses a lot of bandwidth to stream TV). The vast majority of my devices are actually running over a CAT5 network throughout my home (I always avoid using wifi if I can but do have a few WAPS to connect the usual suspects like iPhones, iPads and a few other things like the Tapo sockets). I suspect that my network is now having issues because the Modem/Router I have from my new ISP is just not up to the job. I've been looking at other modem options including those which will provide a mesh. In that context I'm wondering if a higher performing modem (wifi 7) will actually improve my WIRED network performance???? I would use something like the TP-Link Deco or Netgear Orbi with wired backhaul between nodes and then uses switches to add additional devices to each node. I'm hoping this might stop the issues I'm currently experiencing (I think a lot of those are probably from the 9 PoE wired IP cameras using up a lot of bandwidth to communicate to an slo wired NRV). Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Curious if you could test wireless, wired, and combined backhaul? Not just bandwidth, but also latency. It's still somewhat rare for device to support 6E or 7. I'd bet a good wifi 6 mesh with wired backhaul is going to match or outperform any 6E or 7 setup in real world use.

They really need to implement 2.5-5Gb wired backhaul on these mesh systems. That way you can utilize the benefits of the wifi 7 without the losses from distance & walls.

Wifi 6E and 7 have crazy high max bandwidth. People seem to forget its beyond anything they can use and it has a worse range. Like switching to a car that can go 250mph and has a range of 15miles. It sounds cool, until you remember that you only drive 50mph most of the time and often want to go further than 15miles.

Ive had wifi7 setup since last year. Sadly ive only 1 device capable of making good use of it. I love to stream games and its painful to see NEW devices coming into 2025 that still dont have wifi7!?! Having the reduced latency is a total game changer, i wish more were aware of the difference.

We’ve got a 1Gb fiber connection at home and a WiFi 6 router from our ISP. Like most ISP-provided routers, it’s pretty basic—not exactly top-tier quality. So, I’m thinking about upgrading.

Now, here’s where I’m stuck: Is WiFi 6E good enough, or should I go all-in on WiFi 7? Should I go with TP-Link’s WiFi 7 mesh system or the Eero Pro WiFi 7? My place is about 1,000 square feet, so I’m not sure if a single unit will cut it or if I should go for a two- or three-pack.

Yeah… lots of questions.

99.99% of people don’t need anything more than N.
I have 3 Apple routers in my single family home, all wireless N, work great.
I don’t need 1 gbps speeds on any of my mobile devices.

Good Review! comprehensive and straight forward. I agree wifi5 is now dead so 6,6e,7 are the choices. Sorry to say but Wi-Fi 7 is way over priced as companies take advantage of the smart-tech everything craze. I also think the dimensions of wifi7 need to be smaller so they don’t stick out in your home. Only suggestion for next review is to go over the management functions as some devices have no way to manage devices.

I'm not trying to have better speed, spectrum 'upgraded' something in the past couple months and now the equipment I have cant even get a 25% of the speed I'm paying when I use get the full speed. It's literally a scam to say youve changed something for the better and then everything got worse and stopped working. My equipment is not old yet they're forcing me to buy new equipment or rent from them to create a subscription for my own internet while also increasing the costs out of nowhere.

Great coverage of WiFi! Subscribed! What do you suggest doing to connect multiple outbuildings? I would like WiFi in two shops, one 50’ from the house and the second 75’ further from the first shop. Running wire isn’t really an option. Is a Mesh system the best route? Maybe a future video?

Ответить
@paulsukhu
@paulsukhu - 01.02.2025 23:13

Having an IoT specific WLAN is a key consideration since many IoT devices only support 2.4 GHz and are not accessed directly locally. Separate permanent fixed location devices from mobile end user devices like phones, tablets and laptops. Use wired LAN for high bandwidth devices where possible.

I have an AT&T Fiber Gateway that supports up to WiFi 6. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't also support 6e. Not anymore. WiFi 6 is plenty for me. My laptop and network printer are on Cat 6, my handheld devices are using WiFi 6.

AT&T is working on a WiFi 7 Gateway for users.

Just sharing my thoughts, I believe it is also good to mention that the physical connection between the network devices is as important as the kind of network devices you are using. Even when using network, BYOD and IOT devices that uses or supports WIFI 7 if your underlying physical connections are still using 1Gbps then you will experience a bottleneck or a throughput cap. for example: having all devices on WIFI7 all these are connected to a L2/L3 SW with 1G ports and uplink to modem/router ISP is also 1G. if you are also using CAT5e instead of CAT6 or CAT7 cables will affect your throughput as well. To maximize and make it more efficient, when upgrading your network all of the components needs to be upgraded as well. Unfortunate if your LAN is running inside a wall and is still on CAT5.
