Tensions escalated in Los Angeles as thousands of protesters faced off with National Guard troops and local law enforcement on Sunday.
The clashes broke out near the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, following President Donald Trump's decision to deploy the California National Guard.
The move marks the first time in decades a state's national guard was activated without the governor's request. Gov. Gavin Newsom called the deployment "purposefully inflammatory" and plans to file a lawsuit against the president.
Protesters blocked off the 101 Freeway, set self-driving cars on fire and threw projectiles at law enforcement. In response, police officers deployed tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs to try to disperse the crowd.
The Los Angeles Police Department also declared downtown Los Angeles an "unlawful assembly" area.
The confrontations came on the third day of protests against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
More demonstrations are expected on Monday.
