Dovekie Rescue!

Dovekie Rescue!

We thought we had seen all the excitement 2018 had to offer, but it turned out that the year had one last adventure in store for us! Recently, our team was called into action to save a small seabird called a little auk, also known as a dovekie, which was blown into shore.

This is common phenomenon this time of year, as these smalls birds can get blown inland during our storms. If they mistakenly land in a road or a parking lot, they become stranded because they are physically incapable of taking off from land.

This is likely the story of our little friend photographed here, who was found at a job site. Fortunately, one of our contractors noticed him following around the excavator and called us to see if we could help. We got in touch with a Cape Ann Wildlife Inc., who advised us to bring him to the nearest body of water, preferably the ocean, but a large pond, river, or lake would work too if the ocean was too far, though it was important we find a place with calm water, as the dovekie would likely be feeling quite fatigued. Furthermore, we were instructed to transport our new friend in a dark box, and remain completely silent during the transportation process, as these birds are known to die from stress!

Thanks to the quick thinking of our contractor, the advice from Cape Ann Wildlife Inc., and the gentle work of our team members, this little auk was successfully released to the safety of the ocean near Little Neck. Please enjoy our photos and video of the release, and remember, if you ever find a wild animal in trouble, you can contact your local wildlife rehabilitation center for help.
