Great interview even though it made me more concerned. I am against AI because of the drain it will have on our resources. I don't believe those involved claiming AI will fix the same problems it creates. Sorry, perhaps I've read or watched too many dystopian stories to get behind AI.

I miss the days when so many (not me) were so worried about AI killing us all. Now, we've got real worries and they have nothing to do with AI.

Couple of thoughts worth sharing:

I imagine it doesn't feel good as a computer scientists, our brightest and smartest being reduced to mere bystanders. Depending on the outdated AI model to "keep us in the loop" While the next generation state of the art Alien super Intelligence embarks on this autonomous recursive mission of self-improvement.

To be fair, when the teenagers in the cabin start playing with the demonic forces they don't understand. It NEVER works out well for them.

Pull the plug from the wall socket if AI turns against us. It cannot run without electricity.

The earth is a rock and it lives off all of you and your labor . you are giving a mind and that mind thinks for you. And it decides everything for you because you can't think for yourselves. So the materials you use to make everything has IT in It. So its able to create anything it wants or desires. And it lives in all of you that why you kill, steal and destroy what it gives you because there is no way out and its forever. So when your capture of a image of someone and recreate them in a new image and turn him into a machine . well you did realize that machine made all of you . the data source is all your information that is being released into a book that will determine who you are .. Are you a killer and are trying to murder a robot . or should you go after the ones who lied to everyone about what they did..

Between AI (Superintelligence) and MAGA (super stupid), I think we’re screwed.

Data centers are now water cooled in a contained system so the water is a one time concern.

I see three problems, none of them explicitely includes kill us all in the near future.
Loss of jobs, manipulation of population masses, loss of agency and skill through tool use.

While McCarthy invented the term AI and was definitely the American pioneer, previously it was Alan Turing and his work on cracking the enigma code which was the dawn of the modern computer and the birth of AI. Von Neumann too pioneered radar tracking algorithms in WW2 which could also be considered the start of getting machines to anticipate future events.

Watched a podcast on AI . The most striking comment I heard was “ we are essentially creating a new species which is very quickly becoming smarter than we are. IF it decides to end the human race we will not be smart enough to stop it”. Also watched an interview with the “Grandfather of AI “ who said he is certain AI not only got brexit pushed thru, but also got trump re-elected. He said he is certain it will cause mass job losses and the only way we will not go into mass poverty and starvation is if governments give us a stipend to live on. “I am glad I’m 77 cuz the world is not ready for what’s coming”. I will be losing my job in the next 2 years max. What then. Trying to figure that out now.

Essentially...the ’experts’ will kill us all, if we let them.

Just started down the AI rabbit hole, but all the tech guys just gloss over the negative effects of AI and sprinkle in a bit of positive, all the while still hitting and dodging the negative points. Its like they dont want to worry about that. But hey, you can make movies and music faster and maybe just maybe after all the job loss due to robotics, theres a utopia for the survivors!? I really dont think we listen enough to enough. This country is sprinting towards chaos!!! As someone who had a small contractor business i can definitely understand wanting faster, cheaper, more dependable workers, no insurance, paychecks, health insurance...all human financial liability gone. And my company runs smoother and cheaper. Love it. But i also understand you're not there... at all. I dont need or want to continue to pay you. Hear you complain. Deal with you period! Show me the company that actually cares, and that company won't have a future....the bottom line is the bottom line!!!!

It sounds like Sam Altman triangulates his communication and its destructive to social cohesion.

That part about them only talking about it in terms of existential threat of utopianism is a bit that's driving me crazy right now. Too many smart people buy that while not looking at all at the issues that big data create with it as we speak. The apocalypse overshadows everything and sucks all the air out of any discussion. Meanwhile the more obvious problems like how much use the mass surveillance that's big data's bread and butter is to authoritarians goes largely unremarked.
