This is one of my favorite all-time hymns and was even sung at my grandma’s funeral back in 1989. I grew up on a farm in rural Oklahoma and went to our tiny country Southern Baptist Church where my my grandma was the church pianist and my great aunt the song leader. At the time my grandma died, I had only been taking piano for 2 years, but they didn’t have anyone else who could play so I was it. We sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” & “Sweet Hour of Prayer” every Sunday for an entire month until I could learn more hymns, and in spite of this the congregation was forever patient with me & so very encouraging. I went on to play until I graduated HS & then got my Bachelor’s Degree in piano performance, and even went on to Seminary and got part of a Master’s Degree in Worship Leadership/Church Music. In spite of being disabled now I still love to sing, play piano & write my own contemporary Christian music & lyrics. I owe all my success to God, that tiny little country church, and my grandma & great aunt — both talented & devoted women who had a passion & love for the Lord & for church music.
