How to Install Only Security Updates on Windows 10

most of this was recently changed by a Microsoft update

@ Chris Titus: I just saw this video and I reinstalled a complete new version of windows 10 64bit Home. I decided to not keep any of my files and start from scratch, and this was a few days ago, So I've already updated my computer a few times, I was wondering do you still refer people to use tron to do all the things I had it do the last time I had re done a complete copy install?

Do you plan a tutorial about gpedit Windows Update folder settings (Not for Business)? There are some pretty interesting settings, which allow even fully disabling all the updates. But I still want to receive only security ones.

this has not worked. I currently have windows update waiting to shovel Feature Update 2004 down my throat today. The settings are set up as you show on Win 10 Pro. Is there now something else that we have to set up to get it to work?

Holy moly! Am I glad I found your channel a few days ago, and just the perfect timing too as after jumping ship from windows for the mac mini back in mid 2010 and never looked back. it's finally time for an upgrade and to hell with Apple. Last time I was running Windows 7 (upgraded from XP, great OS) on my IBM Intellistation Z Pro dual 2ghz Xeon. So still wanted to stick with IBM so I ordered the T490 healthcare edition w/ facial recognition , fingerprint scanner, and rfid antenna. This laptop will be primarily be used to run Abelton Live 9 to record my guitar and some (light?) Amazon ordering and netflix binging.
 
So my question to you is this:

Would you recommend debloating in my case to completely harness the horsepower? I'm a minimalist and don't care for unnecessary crap. It comes preinstalled with lenovo vantage. Do i need to have this? I don't want to lose any of the bells and whistles in the process.

Had no issues doing this on my work CPU (Windows 10 Pro), but when I try the regedit method on my laptop (Windows 10 Home), I'm not seeing the branch readiness level. I'm on ver 1909, what am I missing?

If you are going to do an all-nighter (perhaps not as smart professionally) and keep working on the pc past 2 AM, will it then still abruptly shut everything down and start doing the update? Or is there still a activity threshold that your computer needs to go below?

Just a thought. Can one disable the feature update components all together through this group policy method, rather then configure it to wait for as long as possible before installing them?

I just did this for my OpenSIM server. I'd rather run a headless Linux box for it, but apparently there is limited support for Linux and its impossible to migrate an OpenSIM server from Windows to Linux.

Thank you so much for this. Recent windows updates would make the desktop icons unresponsive, and all i could do was system restore , and disable updates in services , but following the instructions in this video sorted out the problem perfectly 👍

They've hidden DeferFeatureUpdates and DeferQualityUpdates under WindowsUpdate\UpdatePolicy\PolicyState now as well as BranchReadinessLevel although it's set differently

It doesn't show what you're saying how to fixed the problem in 2021 :(

One might argue the feature updates are actually a security risk as well, potentially and depending if one is found with the feature.

Coming back to this video again. I keep hearing from friends how windows update has screwed them over, I keep sharing this video with them. What a god-level video! Chris thanks again for producing this !

Can you please make an update to this instruction for 2021? Windows 10 have try to hide this setting. My Branchreadiness is in REG_SZ type instead REG_DWORD, and both Defer items are in different place unlike in your instruction

And after each Windows upgrade, so at least once a year, you have to repeat these steps. Because Win 10 likes to "forget" the settings made by the user during an upgrade and resets them to default.

How can I uninstall skype app ? I know about debloat script, but I can't risk running it at the moment, but I really just need to get rid of skype app. It's not on list of installed apps.
