Hansel and Gretel first appeared in Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales in 1812, but its roots go back to a time of famine, when families were forced to make impossible choices.

In the story, Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor woodcutter. As food runs out, their stepmother convinces the father to abandon them in the forest so there would be fewer mouths to feed.

The first time, Hansel hears the plan and drops stones to find their way home.

The second time, they’re left deeper in the woods, with no stones.
They’re truly lost.

Hungry and desperate, they come across a house made of bread and sugar. But it’s a trap—owned by a witch who eats children.
Hansel is locked in a cage.
Gretel is forced to cook.

But when the witch lights the oven, Gretel turns the tables—
and shoves her into the fire.

They steal her gold.
Find their way home.
But their mother is dead.

Hansel and Gretel is not a sweet story.
It’s about what happens when the world turns cold,
when hunger makes monsters,
and when children have to fight
to live another day.
