US Fascism... authoritarian savior - check, Enemy of the State - check, Homosexual/Transgender - check, wanting to expand territory - check, Ally - check (Putin) Propaganda - Steven Miller, Fox, Newsmax - check check check, Camps especially in other countries... check.... We are so screwed.

Great presentation, as always, but i find the choice interesting to NOT show images from our current U.S. president's rallies, when they check every box described for how a fascist comes to power. I realize that's the subtext and point of the entire thing, but still -- why not just come out and say it?

I am so grateful to Rick Steves for using his platform and influence to educate and enlighten. He has the trust of people who don't hear or believe what the "lying liberal media" are telling them. He could just rest, retire and count his millions, but instead he chooses to speak out and leverage his unique credibility to reach a large audience. Bravo - and thank you.

In the span of one lifetime, 80 years, people have forgotten or never learned about this. The few remaining WW2 vets must be watching in despair… it’s hard not to.

Excellent story of fascism. I went to college, educated with 2 degrees now and I have travelled Europe with your excellent guide! So thankful to have a world view and to see historic sites and to know the importance of never repeating the worst of history. We definitely need to protect our public media sources and fix education in the United States. We are in a very bad situation here in America and placed here by the low information voters who need to get outside their box and read/seek/watch history in books, or excellent programs such as yours on a social media source. Have you noticed the first thing he says is that the axe was a symbol of fascism. The Tesla logo looks just like a double side axe…. His platform is X … sounds just like axe! His son is named X and he owns SpaceX . Coincidence????

Fascism did end in Europe for Real on 20/11/1975 with the death of Francisco Franco in Spain.
1 year before on 25/05/1974 after 48 years the "Estado Novo" ( The New State" felt on the Carnation Revolution lead by the Military in Portugal.
Portugal was the longest - lasting Fascist State in Europe

I est was asked why I considered Mr. Steves interpretation of the fasces ( and not Fascia as he said )was phoney, as he was right according to Wikipedia. This is the introduction on the subject according to Wikipedia:Fasces (/ˈfæsiːz/ FASS-eez, Latin: [ˈfaskeːs]; a plurale tantum, from the Latin word fascis, meaning 'bundle'; Italian: fascio littorio) is a bound bundle of wooden rods, often but not always including an axe (occasionally two axes) with its blade emerging. The fasces is an Italian symbol that had its origin in the Etruscan civilisation and was passed on to ancient Rome, where it symbolised a Roman king's power to punish his subjects,[1] and later, a magistrate's power and jurisdiction.

The fasces was the object that embodied the power over life and death in the roman republic and in the phoney image of the republic that was maintained alive during the impartial period, a structure the US will soon be. And it is this totalitarian lecture of the fasces as an object and a symbol why it was chosen by Musolini. Mr. Steves huggy dovie interpretation might be mentioned from time to time, but this reinterpretation opens the way to read the fasces as a symbol of the unity of one people in the hand of one person, and thus opens the the way for an emperor or an imperial president who is the only vessel of power. The same superficiality with the sentence "Mussolini build a futuristic suburb called E.U.R." E.U.R is the accronyme for Esspositione Universale Roma, an expo planned for 1942 which never happened because of WW2. And it had a very clear urbanistic goal, i.e. link the city of Rome to the port of Ostia. Your explanation of the fascia is phoney. At first it was the symbol of the lictores, Roman civil servants who were attendants and bodyguards to a magistrate who held imperium, namely the consuls of the republic. The fascia was ment to symbolise the lectures capacité to enforce the law personified in the magistrats they accompanied - and this by physical punishment (the sticks to flog people) and the axe to symbolise death penalty (by chopping the head off). This sign of power was then used by the fascists. It is by the way interesting to note that the fascia is still used in Frances coat of arms to symbolise the republic.
