Some people are saying, that Angela Merkel is the new Adolf Hitler, because of her speech. That's because some people think that she wants to deem all non-liberal opinions invalid. What she means isn't, that you are not allowed to hurt someone's feelings with by expressing yourself, she means, that if people rally to be violent towards others , purely because they have a different opinion, they shouldn't be given a platform.

A local politican faced hate speech and death threats from nazis for his decision to let refugees in. The hate against him was nurished in internet forums and a member of such a forum killed that politican.

Some decades ago germans used speech to spread hate against jews and ended up killing 8 million of them.
Since then their constitution has a hierarchy:
Human dignity first.
All else - including freedom of speech - second.

Hate speech is speech as well. Defending freedom of speech means that you also defend other peoples rights and opinions even if you don't agree with them.

It just shows how your world view is completly distorted when you label Angela Merkel as "the left". Her party, the CDU, is a center-right party in Germany. When she talks about hate-speech, what she means is the provocation of aggression or even violence against some people as well as death-threads. The reason why Europe and espacially Germany has these rules is because we learned from our history. The Nazis used that exact tactic of false accusation, hate-speech and violence to gain power.
Sadly the US does not learn from our history nor from its own because it never lead to the US' collapse.
I personally think that earlier or later this ignorance by many US-Americans will eventually lead to some kind of breakdown for the US.

Merkel is opposed to freedom of speech, because the German legal system differentiates between freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. Freedom of opinion is a right guaranteed by Germany's constitution.

You just abused the notion that Americans, as opposed to Germans, aren't willing to have a nuanced discussions of the legal realities on freedom of speech. Because the legal situation is very similar, Germany just acknowledges is for what it is.
