A symbol is a multidimensional pattern of associations between the mental sphere and the emotional sphere. The boundary region between mind and feeling is populated by symbols that, collectively, serve a translational function, directly relating thought and feeling meaningfully imaginally. Symbols are "charged" by your understanding of them, your focused attention upon them. The more highly charged a symbol is, the more vivacious is its operability--the more potent it is. The desire or need for translation activates the symbological processes. An analog of this symbolical translation layer exists as well between the physical sphere and the emotional sphere, taking the form of the habit nature. Mentally, conceptualization is a symbol-making exercise. Language is an especially dimensional symbol system.

My take on 'occult' is that many people lost there way in terms of Christianity and sought to find a new path, to start again and hopefully reveal to themselves the aspects of Christianity that they had lost. It also seems that many of them got lost in this search and went down really rather silly paths.

As a former satanist and occultist, this is precisely it. I even go a step further and say the Orthodox liturgy and the life of the Church and its people is EXACTLY the same in that it operates upon the same spiritual principles and natural realities BUT in its most robust and nuanced form, occult practice is the perfect inversion of those things which God has put of Himself into the world and into us as creatures made in His image. And to use the language of Fr. Turbo, it’s the raping of reality through the willful exercise of one’s own will over both reality and other creatures in order to circumvent God’s will and His plan for the His creation and the material world. It is a most vile sin of which I continue to repent. Lord have mercy on me.

G-d created the serpent and the tree and their function is similar to letting your child leave home, the nest. Partly you don't want it, but you also do want it, because that's the only way to grow forwards, for them to become adult individuals like you. You don't want to kick your offspring into the world, but rather you want them to leave by their own will and choosing. Only after they're out in the world, they'll have to use their own judgement and act like their parents.
