Could the phone not realise it is thousands of feet in the air? And act accordingly.

Why not just turn phones off from pre-take off to post-landing? Saves battery and wave spectrum totally.

People don’t fly often have forgotten that ANY cell towers can broadcast or receive cell signal within few miles (not advertised 25 miles). You can’t receive or transmit anything while you on the air, so it useless to turn WiFi/Cellular on anyway. Leave your phone constantly searching for an absent WiFi/Cellular uses up lots of phone battery. So do yourself a favor, just turn the useless feature on your phone to off if it’s not use, or leave it on as some airline don’t even care about it

You do realize this was not always a thing. If airplane mode was to protect us it would’ve been something that pilots would’ve been asking people to do for years. This concept is only about a good 20 to 30 years old.

The range of a cell phone is a few inches. No speaker is going to get disrupted by a cellphone unless they're right next to it. No passenger is going to have any effect on a speaker unless that passenger is sitting in the pilot's lap with his cell phone right next to speaker in question. Everything else is an absolute lie. Cell phones don't affect planes. AT ALL!

They don't allow airplane mode anymore

I learnt this the hard way. I forgot to turn on the flight mode and later on the bill came up, I almost fainted. Turned out my phone had picked up the signals over territories we flew over and it costed me like 500$. It the end there were some negotiations and I paid 200$. Not worth the time nor the money. And now the first thing I do when I get on board is not fasten my seatbelt but turn on the flight mode 😂

The real reason you cannot make phone calls when airborne nowadays is actually so you don't disrupt and delay the Cabin Crew service and also because in some Airlines you can call via the aircraft's Satelite phone paying a huge sum, and they don't want you to use your own phone while you are already or still airborne and have network.
After all, you are free to use your phone for calls before start up and taxi, so you can see this makes no sense. There are dozens of transmissions before taxi and all aircraft systems are already operating, so you can see that Cell phones do not interfere anymore. The very early cell systems did interfere, with a noise similar to pairs of Morse dots. You may remember hearing them on your TV. I was Air Traffic Controller and remember it well. It's gone now.

It's amazing how the technology advance enables the virtually infinite amount of bandwidth in a spectrum! The issues being interference and discrimination/filtering.

I have a degree in radiophysics. This is the worst video I've seen on TED, as it has little to do with reality. The signal emitted by modern phones in 2024 is so weak that saying it works like a military jammer for cell towers many km/miles away is like saying a person lighting a match across the street burns the sensor of your photocamera. When flying, you could be close only to cell towers almost directly below you, and these don't even "see" your signal because of directivity diagram of their antennas, which only cover the surface, but not the area below or above the cell towers.

I never put my phone in airplane mode. Earlier they BS us about switching mobiles at petrol stations as well.

Ironically this is more compelling to me than the lie I never believed anyway, that my phone would harm the flight. Knowing the actual truth I will now consistently turn my phone on airplane mode for every flight! (I usually do but sometimes forget)

If it was dangerous planes would have crashed. By now, thousands upon thousands haven’t put their phones in airplane mode, because they are forgetful.

Guilty. I never put my phone in airplane mode unless my connection is bad and use it to reconnect 😂

We all know the best solution would forcibly turn all the fones in a plane to flight mode, but that's never gonna happen
