I’m Mark Brooks and this is the 2 minute Tuesday top news summary.
Muzmatch, a dating app for Muslims, just raised $ 7M. The company was started in 2015 by a former London banker, and was later accepted to YCombinator, which is a Silicon Valley startup accelerator programme which offers mentorship and financing. Muzmatch has 1.5M users and will use the $7 million for an international expansion.
In legal news, Match Group was sued last year by a patent troll called NetSoc alleging that Tinder infringed on its patent titled the “Method and system for establishing and using a social network to facilitate people in life issues”, whatever that means... A Texas federal judge tossed this lawsuit, saying the patent is invalid because it lacks an inventive concept and constitutes an abstract idea.
Also in legal news, Facebook agreed to pay $5B in settlement with The U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The $5 billion penalty is the largest ever imposed on any company for violating consumers’ privacy.
At last, Tantan, the “made-in-china tinder”, is back in the Chinese app stores. Momo, the parent company of Tantan, was ordered by the Chinese regulators to remove the app from the local app stores because of violation of regulations. Tantan returned back to the stores last week after a 10-week rehab and became, once again, the top grossing app in China, in less than 24 hours!
Did you know there are still 69 countries that consider same-sex acts illegal? This week’s Tinder news; people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer can now feel a bit safer on Tinder. Their profiles will no longer automatically appear on the app when they arrive in an oppressive state, thanks to a new security feature called Travel alert.
On the subject of safety, The Meet Group wants to keep minors off its apps. The live-streaming company is now testing an age verification technology from UK-based Yoti. Yoti’s Age Scan is able to estimate a person’s age based on complex algorithms the company developed using machine learning processes.
As you can see, users privacy and safety has been a hot topic recently and many online dating companies make it as a top priority. So it came as a surprise to us seeing the most recent Tinder commercial. The video called “Don’t Fly Solo” instigates risky behavior such as meeting strangers in remote and isolated places. Come on! Tinder’s creative agencies really need to know what's happening in and around the online dating world.
