It drives me crazy how the US has absolutely awful fast food promotions, every time you hear about a really cool collab or new product, it's always coming out of Japan or SEA.
ОтветитьVHS collecting has grown alot and has become a growing part of my resale business, it's in the same growth cycle as retro games in the early 2000s, where they are relatively cheap and plentiful, it won't last forever though.
ОтветитьI'm loving these slob episodes. They're so fun. We have a market in Glasgow called The Barras. Now it's the kinda place that makes you feel itchy (I can't explain it, it's just so old and dusty). They have a bunch of VHS sellers but most of them are down this dank looking alley and right at the back are boxes of porn and a wall of porn magazines in order of publishing date (they have stuff from like 50s). There's even a sign saying they're always looking for more stuff 😂😂. It's utterly bizarre.
Great video guys. Love hearing you chat about your VHS', fills me with nostalgia.
You should have called it statutory tape
ОтветитьCuration is definitely something I miss about old media. There was something to be said for limited storage space and the focus that would require.
That is to say, I find the Pure Moods CDs more fun to listen to than an endless stream of new age music 24/7 to study/chill to.
How you describe thrifting VHS is what record collecting was like in the early 2000s. A lot of my vinyl got flood damaged and now I can't justify reentering the hobby. Maybe I'll try VHS too!?
ОтветитьAnother VHS reason: some things simply aren't available on any other format. I watch a lot of old movies. I mean really old movies, as in 1915-1945. There are many movies that have never come out on anything except VHS or Laserdisc.
ОтветитьThe VHS Awakens
ОтветитьKinda blew my mind not long ago when I realized vhs tapes in early/mid 80s were so expensive. I remembered in early 90s, they were much cheaper. Around 14.99-30. Crazy a couple years prior they were priced around $80-90.
ОтветитьSome movies absolutely look better on tape. The effects on Conan, that sort of thing. I'll also defend cassette, sometimes the distortion adds to the sound, you can store more audio on a cassette, and they are capable of sounding as clean as a CD of you know what you're doing.
My real problem is the question is really "Why are you having fun differently to the way I have fun?" The answer is get bent, that's why.
A couple of years ago I started collecting obscure VHS tapes that were never released in any other format and unavailable to watch anywhere online. I also upgraded to a badass VCR and built a PC specifically for digitizing tapes. It took countless hours of research and tons of trial and error but I've been slowly learning more and improving upon the process. It's really satisfying to take that raw analog signal and turn it into something fit for modern displays/viewing standards. I never would have guessed a tape could look so clean and high quality. Plus it feels great from a preservation standpoint too.
Ответитьdudes! that's a great show-- "craiglist stories" - you want mine? ok cool- so my wife loves shoes and has a bunch- so 10ish years ago-right when CL was filled with hookers and fun- we were moving and had a shit ton of unused womens shoes. so i put em on craiglist (not really to make money- just to not throw away unused shoes). So some guy wanted to buy em... so we met up at CarMax by my house. safe neighborhood- everything checking out so far... upon meeting the guy- he was strange, like really fucking strange...didnt say much and was just looking down- not at the shoes. So i am a big dude 6'3" 225 ish- so i was asking for 200 bucks for like 60 pairs of shoes- womens shoes. So- through basically silence he made a request right away _ "ill give you 300 if you try a few pairs on...."
yeahhhhhhhh
Am I crazy, or does Mark look a fair bit like Newt from AVGN fame. If Frankie ever makes a film about the fall of AVGN, I think we have our Newt.
ОтветитьI just got in the original run of Muppet Babies McDonald's toys from the 80's all sealed.
ОтветитьI tried to get into VHS and the tape was immediately eaten by my VCR. I cleaned the headers and everything. Turns out that if some tapes aren't rewound properly the weight of the tape will warp and degrade portions of the tape. So I just stick with Laserdiscs. At least I can store them properly and they're just as inexpensive in most cases although the selection and availably isn't as robust. But what I like about VHS/Laserdisc is that you can go to a store, look through the selection and find a movie that you've never heard of from your childhood, take it home for a couple of bucks and have a great time. And if the movie sucks, well, it wasn't that expensive.
ОтветитьI can't go back to VHS. As a kid, I hated pan and scan. Actually after upgrading to Bluray, I can't go back to DVD, unless it's the only option like with older cartoons.
ОтветитьSays you that you people don't have the Mario 3 happy meal toys complete. My koopa is complete, and I have the little kids toy as well that was a Mario finger puppet.
ОтветитьBruh is weird
ОтветитьMy most played cassette from my childhood is the PInk Panther soundtrack, the cassette is pink and was gifted to me by my older cousin, sadly lost it many years ago and i hope to find it in a flea marked some day
ОтветитьI got a VHS tape of Star Wars a while ago. I don't remember if it was given to me or if I got it from a thrift store. I still haven't watched it. Not just the tape, but the movie itself lol.
ОтветитьYou gotta get back in action w Roddy piper n billy blanks On tape. It's such a gem of everything direct to vhs 90s in one tight package
ОтветитьMy local store has VHS copy of Leprechaun in the Hood, sealed for over $1k. Who buying that? Lol
ОтветитьYou had a picture of James Rolfe but you didn't even talk about him. Unsubscribed. (Even though I was never subscribed
ОтветитьIf I was to show someone Terminator, or The Fly, or any old movie with effects makeup, I’d choose a VCR and a CRT. Much more forgiving.
ОтветитьEveryone talks about the hidden penis tower on the little mermaid VHS tape cover. But not enough people talk about the hidden penis tower in the Aladdin movie itself outside of Doug Walker. FYI, even as a kid I thought the Taco Bell Coin game was stupid.
ОтветитьHah! I feel like a contributor to the show. Thanks for the fleshed out response on video! You made some great points in your initial response that I hadn’t thought of and it was interesting to hear the other perspectives as well.
ОтветитьGrimace VS Barney who ya got?
ОтветитьAll this talk about VHS (not tapes™) was the final straw. I dug up my Mini HDMI2AV so I can dub my own BoxMac tapes later. I'm going to watch them on a Samsung CRT TV when my holiday break finally starts. BTW, Mark sounds like a super chill Dale Gribble.
Ответить“The Taco Bell coin game 🤯”
ОтветитьThere is actually an official release of the unmolested Star Wars original trilogy on DVD. Each movie has 2 discs, one for the special edition and one for the theatrical release.
Ответить“Say yes, to VHS”
ОтветитьI appreciate your enthusiasm for VHS. However, as someone from a Spanish-speaking country, a lot of the VHS we had at home were Spanish dubs (on the other hand, the minority had hardcoded subtitles in Spanish). Nowadays I prefer to watch media with its original language and without subtitles if they are in English.
Maybe there will be a market for VHS here, but it will be much more niche.
Great video. Great interview.
ОтветитьJust for the tape of it,
Yes to VHS!
tapes suck
ОтветитьIf Mr. Smashedbro is missing his arcade glass for missile command, i might have a extra one buried he can have.
ОтветитьI get it, but i also get why people dont, they are poor like me and grew up in the war in irao barely owning things, i have nothing from childhood not even photos. i couldnt imagine living in a house let alone being able to afford to collect nostalgie, its hard to put your mind in that place. like when people say touch grass, i walk half a mile every few days, almost no grass along it just strip malls. life was barren.
ОтветитьSome autistic / ADHD oversharing, but I've been laid off for the past 3 weeks and new podcast clips have been the highlight of my days job hunting, thanks for what you guys do.
ОтветитьMan 14 years ago I was laughing at half in the bag now look at us...
ОтветитьI just recently added Ninja Turtles 1 and 2 to my small VHS collection. I got those not really to watch the movies in VHS form but because I was nostalgic for the advertisements at the beginning of them.
ОтветитьTape Tuawah
ОтветитьThis guy looks like Crispin Glover.
